Curious as I was on the X5 forum hearing people complain about the inability to just update or download (like it used to be) all the maps at once so on road trips you're not waiting for an update when traveling into different regions. We used to be able to download the entire North American map and update via usb stick. Now it seems everything is over the air, yet my current map isn't showing a particular region, just North America.

Can any current owners shed some light on this? Taking a trip to AZ pretty soon and I don't want to be dealing with snags in the trip because of an outdated map. Thank you in advance.

In the original post above…“road map North America live 2021-4” is the navigation maps your iDrive system will be using for the entire No American Continent. Your POI (point of interest) info will be relatively up to date unless the area you’re traveling has changed within the last few months. You have no regional maps updates yet.

The 2nd post above shows a 2019-3 road maps for North America…but with updated 2021-3 regional maps for CA,NV, HI. Outside their region…the map and POI data will be 2-3 yrs old. So if a business has closed down since COVID…it may still be showing up in POI data.

Yes - my regional is still at 2020-4 - so something is wrong with the map updates across the board. My software update came in this summer for the March 2021 update - but never got the July update this Nov/Dec. BMW is baffling on how they roll out updates. Apple has it figured out.

Crazy to think so many people are operating with 2 and 3 year old maps. Roads are constantly being constructed or vacated. I see it all the time doing real estate development. I think BMW got ahead of themselves with all this OTA (over the air) software updating and they cannot keep up at this point.

Just think of the sheer amount of data they are needing to pump out worldwide with all the vehicles now requiring OTA… They should've baked in an easy way for dealerships to quickly update when a car is in for service. Especially the maps which seem to be woefully lagging behind.

Here we go again. BMW just sucks when it comes to anything in technology that changes. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...04660-9999.pdf.

In the US, X7 is supposed to have 3 year free map updates. So based on what's said here, the OTA only updates regional POI and not the actual map? How do we go about getting actual map updates then? I asked the dealer and they said all map updates come via OTA.
I'm still on 2019 map with 2021-4 POI

I think it updates regional maps too. I have 2021-3 (updated from the 2020-4 it came with) for the Northeast region. I thought POI was live (the navi takes longer for me when I search by POI and sometimes pulls in yelp reviews which I believe are live).

I thought dealerships would force an update of the whole map if you requested it, surprised thenew3 is having issues with it. OTA limitation is size based, they don't want to enable (and likely pay for) huge map updates to roll out over OTA.

A different forum has some info from a few years ago: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1489158
