New X7 and Digital Key

Recently purchased a 22 X7 and just upgraded my phone to the S21 Ultra and tried to set up the digital key with Samsung Pass, using my phone to access the car. I had both keys in the car per the BMW app's recommendation, NFC on the phone turned on, got all the way to the pairing part where you drop the phone in the charging tray, then got an error with pairing your device message popping up on the screen. Has anyone had the similar issue with this phone and the digital key setup process as well? If so, any solutions?

I was told by multiple BMW genius folks that the digital key feature only works with IOS. BMW does not support digital key with android. They may add it in the future.

Well that would suck if that is true considering all channels I looked up said it's compatible with Android. I really don't want to go to an iPhone just to have the ability to use my phone as a key. I jumped over to the x5 forums and some folks had success setting up the S21 ultra with digital key. Trying to find out how they did it.

And as I said that, I gave it one last shot and got it to work with samsung pass. Image attached.

It would just be nice to if BMW would just unlock it on 19-20 X7s. There is no different hardware on 21-22. Stupid.

Do you have to start the app and hold the phone up to the door handle to lock/unlock it? Or does it automatically unlock as you walk close to the car?

You have the hold the phone by the car door handle, activate the NFC digital key (usually similar to paying with wallet / card on phone), and wait a few seconds. It'll unlock / lock.

Does not sound convenient at all. Doesn't the IOS version work by just walking close to the car?

The CC card key is just as effective and it doesn’t have to be on to work.

the fob key is even better, don't even have to hold it to the door or put it on the charging tray. Leave it in your pocket or purse, walk close to the car, it unlocks, walk way it locks.

But it does need batteries where the CC can get wet and is far more durable for those times when you might damage the fob. When I got the digital key to work on my phone, I never used it. It was one of those “cool” features to play with but when I really needed a secondary key to the fob, I always used the CC.

As far as I can tell, I have to hold my phone to the handle. Only the actual key fobs work with proximity so far.

I can see all sides of the coin though. The card, yes, doesnt need to be "on" per say and works exactly like the phone would, and yes, the fob is the best with proximity auto lock and unlock, but think about it, the phone can do the lock, unlock, store your credit cards and all...so the theory, we always have our phones on us, and now it can store credit cards and car keys, so you only need to carry a phone, instead of keys, wallet, and phone.

Mystro, love the carbon CC key. I got the plain white one with my purchase....guessing bc I listened to my wife and didnt get the M50i lol.

The comfort access / walking near the car and unlocks is only with the key fob.

Digital key is useful for some. I park my two cars in a garage by my building. Sometimes I forget the key for the other car and I need to get or transport or even drive the car since situation changes or something happens. Really easy to just take my phone and use it to drive instead of going back to up to my apartment and getting the key.

Wish I can just unlock my bmw like I unlock tesla cars with smart phone. No need to take phone out of pocket.
I don't think it requires any high-tech hardware.

I used it once as walking up, pulling out my phone and holding it to the car seems like a step backwards from the actual key that, for I can’t remember how long, let’s me walk up and just open the door.

This is a useless feature until it works like the actual keys do IMHO.

I believe it works like the actual key if you use an iphone where if you walk up to the car, it will automatically unlock (without having to start and app and hold phone next to door handle).

enabled on plain S21

I activated mine on the plain S21. Works great. I was a bit surprised as my S21 does not have UWB. My guess is this version of digital key also support old NFC.

But I think you still need to have your phone near door handle to unlock, am I right?
You are right, no need to launch bmw app.
It more like doing Apple Pay at register

Hi gang....well, here it is....what I believe to be the first ever X7/Android Digital Key set up video. I struggled when trying to find a video to help walk me through it. Figured I would make a video of my own to help others.
