Eating in your X7
Sooo....I'm curious to hear everyone's opinions about eating in their vehicles.
When I get a new car I typically try to hold out and not eat in it as long as possible to preserve the new car smell, avoid my kids spilling milkshakes in the back, etc. After about 6mo I can't resist any longer and it's game on. Is anyone a true holdout and never eats in their car.....or do others realize they will eventually be eating in there and just start from day 1? I'd like to get some feedback.. |

I’ll chime in and say that I did wait a month or so but eating in the car over lunch is what I enjoy doing… I was just really careful… working remote now though. That said, we also eaten when grabbing food on the way back home on road trips… usually never have the time to eat in or just want to get back on the road quicker!

It’s kind of a bit similar to:
- Should I take my dog? - Should I redline it? - What about vaping? That doesn’t leave a trace… - Taking drunk friends home from the club/restaurant as the designated driver? I’ve come to the conclusion that the best approach is to try to maximize life quality while being mildly cautious. A car is an object for use, not for asset appreciation. If you don’t use it to its full capability, you’re giving up parts of what you paid for. |

Snacking only on road trips and eating light items like pretzels, granola bars, etc…. Absolutely no full blown feed bags in the BMW. I honestly avoid heavy eating in all my vehicles.

Wow that was brave....I think I'd be holding the bag out the window on the drive home lol. The worst smell I've encountered in a vehicle is Little Caesars pizza. My kids used to love their pizza and we'd get takeout almost weekly - the crazy bread smell just would NOT go away!! |

I try not to and if so, just a granola bar or something simple. Unfortunately, I'm the boss at my job and often have to run to pick up 30 pizzas, 80 Olive Garden breadsticks w/ garlic, donuts, etc. I had to roll all the windows down and crank up the heat just to keep the pepperoni and garlic smell from setting into the vehicle.

What I hate about eating in a car is once you finish, get out of the car lock the car and come back to the car, there is a smell that I hate it, When I am grabbing a take out, I simply get out put them on the trunk and enjoy my meal!! |

My kids are so solute savages. At their suggestion I’ve lightened up a bit, about things like eating, fingerprints, dragging their backpacks across the hood. I just tell them to be careful, and it has seemed to work.
We have a Dunkin’ Donuts muffin routine for those 6am road games, while it’s still dark out. There are literally at least some crumbs or a lollipop stick or a wrapper on the seat, in a cup holder at all times. We’ve done full blown pizza on plates, on a road trip in the car. Life happens, but eating in the car is typically on an exception basis |

I used to be really OCD about this, but then realized life is more important than my cars. Do we eat full-blown meals, no. But the occasional sandwich, or even the dire fast food break on a long road trip...absolutely. Nothing a little detailing can't fix. I like to use daily type, non-collectible, vehicles vs. saving it for the next owner.

The X7 is a living room on wheels, it's plush and spacious, it's a BMW luxury minivan for the I-can't-stand-my-Odyssey-anymore crowd.
Kids eating is what all that shoulder room and all those cupholders are for, the armrests on the captain's chairs are perfect for chicken nuggets (left arm) and sweet 'n sour sauce (right arm). When they're done, all that legroom is great for the spent containers and greasy bags, and, or course, a Yeti cooler for the ice cream. |

Growing up my parents never let us eat in the car (other than small snacks like gold fish or cheerios). Also, only sippy cups allowed.
I plan to carry that forward with my children. |

I was extremely strict with my kids for the first year, and then they slowly chipped away at my rules. I try not to eat full meals in the car unless we're on a road trip. My complicating factor is that my wife drives the kids to and from a farm 3-4 days a week (2hr round trip), so they often eat food on the go because of the schedule. So I have to clean up debris more frequently.
If I find trash in the car or stuffed in the door pockets, the guilty child has X7 cleaning and vacuuming duty. That's nonnegotiable . |

I recommend getting a yeti cooler or any brand of your choice, then dropping the food in there for your trip back home. Should reduce most of all the smells if not all of them completely. |

No one eats in the vehicles period. Best part about it is the kids do a fantastic job caring for the cars. Bring them up right and they understand caring for things is one way to show appreciation and gratitude for the work that people around them put in to provide for them.
Also, if I ever transport food I notice the scent goes away super fast with the ambient air ionizer. X7 still smells like the day it came home and it's over a year old. |
