How accurate is the X7 MPG computer?

Just curious. Just got mine in December, and been trying to see how much gas goes into a fill up and divide by mileage, but every time my wife has filled up gas so far lol.

I'm getting around 18mpg local, which is amazing for me given the hilly areas around. In my 2019 Ford Explorer Sport, which is rated for 16mpg local, I'm averaging 13.5mpg so I'm pretty happy with an 30% increase if it's accurate.

Those mpg meter is never really accurate and it's better to measure yourself instead. That's what I do at every gas fill-up.

Over 11k miles, I've found the BMW estimate to be about 1-2mpg optimistic. for example on my last trip, it showed 27mpg, but when I filled up the tank and did manual division, I actually got 25.1mpg.
Similarly around town, it typically shows between 15-17mpg but calculating based on # of gallons pumped in, it's actually around 14mpg. (lots of elevation changes, stop and go, and low speeds, average speed about 17mph).

It's going to constantly fluctuate based on the weight of your right foot.

I keep an excel spreadsheet for every fill up…which I’ve done for decades for most of the BMWs I’ve owned. And what I’ve noticed is though the actual MPG and the OBC’s MPG may differ at fill-up…when you average each column over the course of a year…they end up being really close.

Below is an old chart from my pic stack from my 2006 e53 X5…and the year was 2013…but you can see that the actual & OBC display end up only being off by a little (0.3697). I bet if you did this with your X7 it would probably be similar. Again, I’ve done this for my e32 735iL/e34 525iT/e38 740iL/e39 540iT/e53 X5 4.4/f06 650ix GC/f15 X5 5.0…and they all end up the same…only off by a little margin over the course of a year.

Thanks everyone. Looks like you all are correct - in the short term, there may be 1-2mpg difference but over a year it's pretty accurate.
