Help with Snow Tires & wheels for X7 40i
I have 2019 X7 40i with All-Season Tire size: 285/45/r21. Since I can't find studded tires Discount-Tire recommends one size smaller to R20. This means I have to get wheels as well. Can anyone suggest which of these R20 tire sizes listed below I should consider? Is there anything about wheels for these tires I need to be worried from this place?

Hello,
just got confirmation from BMW dealer, says the X7 21" winter wheel tire package arriving in 10 days, will get before end of the year. however, they are 5K total. since I have the 22" wheels, not much of a choice. |

Young that is exactly what I ordered today with wheels. They will install them this weekend. Because I need them ASAP, I chose the following size: Tires: 285/50/R20 Wheels: 8.5"/R20 Total cost: $2,610 but they have 15% discount due to Cyber Monday, so to Total Installed Cost: $2,220. Have you used ISSE snow socks before I wonder how effective is it? |

I bought the ISSE socks for my recent trip to Utah just in case I needed them. For my application they are fine, but I'd do what you did and get real winter tires if I drove real winter weather daily. What part of Washington do you live in? I lived in Seattle for a few years and always had summer tires on my cars. Haha, was no problem except for the time it actually snowed and our driveway was icy. The traction control on my M5 was no good at all and I had to wait for it to melt. LOL. |

So from All-Season 285/45/r21, here is what I installed. Snow/Studded Tires: 285/50/R20 Wheels: 8.5"/R20
Total cost: $2,610 but they have 15% discount due to Cyber Monday, so to Total Installed Cost: $2,220. On my iDrive for the list of tire selection see below picture but the automatic air suspension made the auto. selection and adjustment. The system has selected "Other Tires" option. I ended up having to go that route also. I ordered the 754M wheels (9.5 x 21) and they are supposed to come with 285/45/21 BFG Blizzaks. These are 31.1" diameter vs the 30.7" for the 22's. Maybe that will make up for the gargantuan speedometer error, right? LOL.. Anyway, on to the non-laughing matter: These tires and wheels listed for $4724.72! That's 2-1/2 sets of 20" Michelins for my Super Duty, but my wife wasn't digging any of the aftermarket wheel sets she was shown. Oh well, cost of admission I guess. Anyway, the dealer was gracious and gave me 10% off so my out-the-door was $4549.24. We were planning on making this trip in the fall but we were in the process of getting our new building built and it kept on getting pushed back so now we changed the itinerary a bit and decided to go to Colorado. We thought about just driving my truck but we didn't buy this car to drive my truck on trips. The tires and wheels are en-route from the motherland and should arrive before the year's end. I am hoping for that as we leave shortly thereafter. I wonder if any of the tire manufacturers will make run flat all season or winter tires in the staggered 22's. hopefully so as we really like the look of the 22's on this vehicle.

I got the same wheels in October from getbmwparts.com (online store for some BMW dealer in MD) for $1,095 / wheel or $4,380 for a set, and $4,570 including NY taxes (free shipping). My dealer tried to charge me a similar markup so ordered them myself. |

I actually came from the all-season 21s, but imagine you'll feel similar differences but maybe more pronounced. And these are my impressions (nothing scientific here): - ride - indifferent - neither are loud or the insulation on the X7 is good enough that you won't notice. - grip - dry - less than the all seasons but not materially less, but noticeable. You may feel this more coming from the 22s. Especially during the break in period, make sure you take corners a little more conservatively. - grip - wet - temps in NY haven't been all that cold yet so nothing really to compare yet but about the same as the all seasons. - grip - snow - We had 1-2 days of snow where I tried it out (I live in a hilly area) - significant improvement in grip over all seasons. In previous cars with all seasons, in fresh snow, I wouldn't be able to stop quickly coming down the relatively steep grade of hill near my house (I would imagine it's a 20-25% grade hill). - fuel economy - not enough experience yet. Hope that helps. |

All seasons are just tough for us because of where we live. While NY isn't the most snowy place (I live in Westchester, just north of the city), we have lots of steep hills where we live. We've had all seasons the past two winters, and if there was ice / snow on the ground it was really tough to go up and down the hills without sliding and skidding. In addition, we take a couple trips up to Vermont, Tremblant or upstate during the winter and I wouldn't want to be there without winters. As you can find on various threads here, winter tire (tyre for those not in the US) performance is significantly better than all seasons in cold, icy or snowy conditions. I am like you and preferred the look of the 22's but for a few reasons, it made sense to have the 21 all seasons: - I've had bad experiences with pot holes etc cause the roads in NY are crap so the extra sidewall is helpful. - While winter weather isn't particularly severe here, you can get pretty volatile swings in temperature/weather as early as September and as late as April/May. All seasons make the car derivable in those type of conditions. - While all season summer performance is not as good as summer tires, the difference isn't material for what we use the car for (i.e., I'm not tracking this car). Whereas all season performance vs. winters is more material. - Cost of owning the all seasons is significantly less than the 22s: additional cost to order ($1,300) + the need to buy an additional set of tires to get the same miles out of the tires that you should with the all seasons (+$2,000). |

My new wheels and tires came in this week and I had them mounted today. They ride pretty darned good; smooth and quiet. I guess I'm as prepared as I can be now for the trip to Colorado. I don't know what the life expectancy is for these tires but I'll take them off soon after we get back and store them in my warehouse so we can use them next trip.

I went with 19" wheels and blizzack dm-v2 tires, which most of you likely wont be interested in, but they fit fine and the ride is nice! And you would think the handling would suffer, but honestly I cannot tell much of a difference in daily and even slightly spirited driving. I've been 90-100mph around some decently sharp highway turns and its planted.
