I really hope they give up with these awful GT's, although it seems they'll just blend the GT design language into the new GC's... maybe that's why the rear end of the 2GC looks abnormally tall, almost reminiscent of the original 5GT. They do look awfully similar

if BMW had produced a 2 series sedan in the last 5 years... that 500 car drop wouldn't even be occurring.

you can't sell that which you choose not to make.

BMW sells more sedan than coupe at every model level, whether it is a car or an X model. Based on your comments, Hell they sell more 4 series " gran coupes" than actual 2 door 4 series coupes. The decision by BMW to decline to produce a 1er or 2er sedan for a decade in the US is simply stupefying.

instead... Mercedes scooped up all those sales with the CLA and then doubled down with the A class

Although anything can happen, especially since Merc beat BMW for November sales by >2000. It also seems Lexus is taking 3rd place from Audi.
If BMW loses to Mercedes again this year for the luxury vehicle sales crown... it will be due to a lack of SEDANs, not SUV/SAV.... which will be consistent with the reason they lost the #1 luxury automaker sales crown in the US three years ago.

Like BMW, they sell a lot more SUVs:
GLC : 7515;
GLE : 6052;
GLS: 2893.
A little bit better than X family.
But they also sold G Class: 1309 pcs. No BMW rival and it's in the superior price range...
For the sedans, they sold:
A Class: 1544;
CLA: 1641. Here Merc has a big advantage also for December sales.
C Class: 4469, but it's at the end of life cycle
E Class: 3689;
S Class: 1452.

It will be a very close result at the end of December

I agree that is likely true. Still, even if they manage to move more 2GC than Mercedes A/CLA and Audi A3/S3, they’ll still be selling more SAVs than cars. However, the added volume would indeed put their total comfortably in front of Mercedes all else being equal. But remember, Mercedes has added the GLB now so that could keep things close. It’ll be another exciting race to watch in 2020.

4GC production has been slashed drastically starting at the beginning of the year. Still sells, just less inventory.

These cars were not around last year! Not impressive to increase sales by adding new product. Sure, it's a way, but not impressive. Impressive if you grow a segment YoY.

Last year the 2018 3-series was on its way out. Production was down for the 2018 and the 2019 was pushed a month. The 2019 is not popular, just higher availability compared to the 2018 availability last year.

meanwhile in Australia (2019)

Breaking down Australian car sales statistics by manufacturer reveals Audi's sales are down 11.8 per cent so far this year, with Land Rover (down 23.1 per cent) BMW (down 2.4 per cent), Mercedes-Benz (down 13.1 per cent), Lexus (down 0.2 per cent) all feeling the pain.
In fact, of the major premium brands, it's really only Alfa Romeo that has recorded positive growth year on year, owing mostly to the small base expected of a recently launched brand.
Overall, 2019 has seen the lowest volume of car sales since 2009.

BMW has had a lesser decline compared to arch rivals Merc and Audi.

Interestingly, there are 775 motor vehicles per 1000 people in Australia, only next to US (822).

I wanted a 4GC to replace my 6GC, but next to the G20 I just couldn't. I didn't want to wait another year or two either

The really ugly grills haven't rolled out just yet. would be interesting to compare Nov 19 vs Nov 20 (next year). I am pretty confident, it will be the death of 4 series.

BMW light trucks are part of the brand and it happens to be the favored market segment of today's car buyers. BMW could offer the finest cars on the planet and their light trucks would still outsell them as consumers prefer SUV's. If you are going to throw shade at BMW you may as well call Porsche a light truck company as their ratio of SUV's sold vs cars is much, much higher.

I'm sure. It's an older model with tapering demand, so that does not surprise me at all. No doubt BMW has helped the situation by making the G20 the more attractive buy financially, too. Either way, the result is the result: as of yet, no increase in total car sales due to the G20, just a partial mitigation of decline. As discussed above, the F44 could be the ticket though, and I think that the G30 LCI will also spark an uptick there too. I still doubt we'll see BMW cars outsell BMW SAVs next year (note that you have to subtract the X1/X2 from the passenger car category and add it to the light truck category in order to get car vs. SAV sales).

The 6GT is history in the US; MY2019 was the end. By looking at the monthly 6 Series numbers since they finally cleared out the remaining stock of the 6GC (and any lingering coupes and convertibles too I suppose), it has been clear just how poorly this model sells here.

For RoW, it will get an LCI next year with the G30 5 Series and remain on the market for the rest of its originally planned cycle. After that, it will be discontinued and there will be no more GT models.

I'm a CA so I'm aware of that. I'm speaking to almost doubling the sales from last month, up from 4200 in September, and almost 4000 in August.

M-B just reported November results, 337k Mercedes-Benz and smart cars sold in NAFTA, down 1% vs 2018 for the eleven month period.

Like I said, even in RoW, there will be no more GTs after the current ones finish out there cycle. Itís true that they sold better in some other regions than in the US, but they are still very low volume and BMW canít justify another generation.
