I had a QX80 before the X7 and its easier to get in the QX80 than the X7. The grab handles in the QX80 was in the perfect location. The X7 does have more legroom in the 3rd row than the QX80.

I don't think any SUV regular or extended versions can replace a minivan in practicality. SUV bed is higher compared to a minivan which matters a lot for knees/legs in long distance journeys, it doesn't matter how we fit in the third row of SUV. The deep luggage space behind third row is unbeatable. For a family of 5+ minivan is a no brainer. I resisted myself over the years from buying a minivan, struggled with luggage space, asked wife and kids to pack minimal, bought everything ultraportable from seats to strollers. All this because I hate driving a minivan, I feel 10 yr older and other psychological issues.

Luckily my X6M has had enough space for my family of 5. My wife and I just don't see us driving a minivan for the same reasons that Vink mentioned . X7 is a great option to have and will certainly be more than enough for us, although I am stressed about not having the aggressiveness and the agility of an X6M.

Heck, Avis has a ton of minivans for sale with low mileage for $17-18K. haha, that's difference between 40i and 50i. LOL. If you want SUV with cargo space, it's Expedition Max, Navigator L, Yukon XL, Suburban, or Escalade ESV. Otherwise any Van. If you want to be different in a Van Package, look at a Mercedes Metris in either passenger configuration or "tricked out" by a conversion company like Explorer. |

All big, extended SUV's drive like trucks and there're nowhere close to X7 in fun factor. It all depends on the priorities.
-Minivan: comfortable ride for 7 with luggage, pathetic life as a driver unless it's your wife driving. -X7: Fun to drive, Cool dad, don't care about third row passengers comfort, get out 5 min early to open access for third row, pack less or get those hitch mount luggage rack or roof top luggage carrier. Good ground clearance if ever into off Roading. -Extended SUV's: They're big.... for everything! From parking to driving. No fun factor here. Just for the feel of an SUV, you're driving a Penske truck! I may be exaggerating but just saying because we're driving all year around. I rented a Escalade ESV for a week in Denver and those hills and curves are no good for ESV and I'm assuming it's no different than similar sized ones! |

Agreed, driving those extended SUV is no fun and parking them is a nightmare!
If you really need to the trunk for a long trip, you can always rent a minivan.

I just wish BMW built an X9! Maybe around 215" long. Expedition Max is 222, GM Longwheel base SUV 224. 215 would add a decent amount of cargo space behind row 3, w/o getting too big. or I wish Mercedes put the interior and drivetrain of the GLS into the Metris. LOL for the a year's worth of lease payments you can add this to the Fleet in addition to the X7. 21K mile Dodge Grand Carvan for $17K. Use it as your Home depot, costco, x-mas tree pickup car, airport parking lot, etc..... https://www.aviscarsales.com/ultimat...260d7d55d1.htm Last edited by like2short; 12-10-2019 at 10:38 AM.. I have two kids (6 and 4) so the X7 is perfect. Even for us though, I am happy we have our van (2017 Chrysler Pacifica). We are often shuttling family/friends and/or cargo. Van cannot be beat.
As for those that worry about the image - I hear you but you get over it quickly. Your lot in life is such that you can afford a BMW X7. Be happy with that - who gives a flying f*ck what others think of you.

4 kids. Ages 6 and down. X7 M50i (my car) and a Yukon Denali XL.
Ok to get the obvious question out of the way, I got an X7 in addition to our Yukon because I help pretty often with school drop offs and pickups. M50i makes it plenty fun for my daily driver. Wins for Yukon XL - Just way more room. Easier to get kids in and out of the car and into their seats. Can take the family and the stroller at the same time for normal trips, plus luggage when we need to. If the whole family is going somewhere, we take this 90% of the time. Wins for X7 - way more luxurious (and therefore more annoying when kids get dirty). Much better to drive. The kids love the X7 because I can change the color of the interior lights. Use this as my daily driver and on our weekly date night. We take the whole family only on short trips where we don't need to bring anything but us. |

the GM Full Size might be the ticket coming next year.
The Tahoe is now 211" long, big increases in rear leg room and cargo space. 26 cu ft of cargo space behind row 3. Pretty good. In denali or escalade trim should be nice. They now have independent rear suspension, magnetic ride, or air suspension now. look the BMW still gunna be nicer, but GM just closed the gap. https://media.chevrolet.com/media/us...-suburban.html |

GM gets reasonably good fuel economy from these engines because of cylinder deactivation. Turbos add cost, which is probably why they don't go smaller displacement turbo, but they do have a 310 hp turbo 4 cylinder 2.7L in the pickup trucks. I read the turbo diesel they offer is pretty nice in the pickup trucks. |

Yeah. What's up with all those whiners complaining about BMWs grilles when every other manufacture has even bigger grilles! Prejudice I guess...

I only have 2 kids age 4 and 12. We were shopping for a big 3 row and narrowed it down to X7 and GLS. We often cart around my son's friends so a 7 seater is a necessity for us. My oldest is only 4'10" (not that tall) but he found the 3rd row in the X7 to be too tight and uncomfortable. The 3rd row in the GLS had a few more inches of leg room and he found that much more comfortable.
We also found that the X7, when you come to a stop and the engine shuts off, the AC stops blowing in cold air after a few seconds, while in the GLS the AC is running off the 48v system so it continues to blow in cold air even when engine shuts off at a stop light. The wife found the ride of the X7 a bit harsh (she drives an X3) and the GLS to be much more comfortable. Since we will be using the car for long family trips (often with up to 6 or 7 people) and for hauling kids around to various sports/school activities, we ended up ordering a GLS for it's larger size and more comfortable ride. |

re your second point, I am pretty sure you can code for the on/off button to remember last setting (e.g. not shut off at the light).

Pushing the "Sport" button on the console a) lowers the suspension to greatly reduce body roll and b) simultaneously disables the Auto Stop Start function. While one can look into coding, it's a one-button solution for the two biggest performance nitpicks of the X7. I tap "Start" and then "Sport" every time I start the car and it's all ready to go. |

I didn't know that. I read that since 2018 all new cars are mandated to have the start stop button restart every time you start the car so it won't remember the previous setting. Your trick does the job, too, as I expect to only be driving in Sport anyway.
