The manual talks about how to unlock it with the physical key and how to pop off the cover on the door handle to use the key. I would suggest looking in the manual. Obviously if it's locked in the car, then I would download BMW Driver's Guide app and search the PDF. But basically your pulling out the door handleand use your finger to pop out the cover. That exposes the key hole.

Any idea what would cause a dead battery?

Any number of things that would cause a current drain. Lead acid batteries can have their life shortened by repeated significant draining below normal levels. If a battery is fully discharged, it may not recover. Could also just be a battery defect I am of course assuming it is a lead acid battery.

One of the "features" of the X7 (and other contemporary vehicles) is that it's become difficult to tell if they're on or off, especially with functions such as auto start/stop. I get out and the dash and accessories are still operational. Did I forget to push the start button? Hopefully they're smart enough to shut themselves off at some point.

I understand current drain (and the equations on your avatar), but find a dead battery in a year old car unusual (although Florida heat kills). Just wondering if this is a matter of premature death or some electrical system malfunction.
