iOS 13 Preview - New CarPlay Features

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
New features coming to CarPlay in iOS 13 this fall:

CarPlay Dashboard
An all-new view gives you a single place to keep track of maps, audio controls, and smart Siri suggestions.

Home screen redesign
The CarPlay Home screen is refreshed with a modern look that features rounded corners, new table views, and a redesigned status bar.

Album art in Now Playing
Automakers can choose to showcase album art so it’s easier to find the perfect song, album, or playlist for your drive.

Apple Maps updates
Apple Maps always appear on the dashboard, even when different points of interest pop up.

Smaller Siri screen
Siri takes up only part of the screen, so you can keep an eye on things like directions while still making requests.

Second video stream support
Automakers can develop CarPlay systems that show information in a second screen, such as in a cluster or HUD.

Hey Siri support
Automakers can develop CarPlay systems that can perform “Hey Siri” requests with native microphones.

Light mode
An alternative, easy-on-the-eyes light view for CarPlay.

Independent app views
An app open on iPhone doesn’t affect what is open on the CarPlay screen, so passengers can pick a song on the device while the driver can keep looking at Maps.

Calendar app
A redesigned Calendar app gives you a quick view of the day while you’re on the go. Just tap to get directions or dial in to a meeting.

Apple Music redesign
A redesigned Apple Music tab makes it easier to discover new music and old favorites.

Bluetooth album art
iOS supports the AVRCP 1.6 standard, which includes album art when connected to a supported car kit or speaker.

Junction View in Apple Maps
Apple Maps in CarPlay features a more detailed view of intersections.

Adjustable screen size
Automakers can develop CarPlay systems that change the size of the display dynamically.

Irregular screen size support
Automakers can develop CarPlay systems that display edge to edge in nonrectangular screens.

Do Not Disturb While Driving
You can enable Do Not Disturb While Driving in CarPlay so notifications won’t come through.

Settings
Now there’s a place to change display and Do Not Disturb settings.

These changes look promising. One of many current design flaws is when you're in a map, either Apple maps, Waze or any other map and you receive a phone call, the entire screen shows the phone call and you can no longer see the map. The new design remedies this issue. Hopefully BMW extends navigation maps to the digital cluster and HUD, and not just for Apple Maps but for Waze and Google maps.

As someone who has been very unimpressed with CarPlay in the 3 vehicles I've owned with the feature... this actually looks exciting.

BMW needs to implement that feature, they have not done that so far.

That is disappointing, considering the OP:

If you use Apple Maps the new split screen dashboard that lets you have multiple apps on the screen like Music and Calendar is cool.

But if you use Google Maps or Waze, this isn't a great update. All we get is Siri not interrupting full screen navigation, it's actually meh, not a big deal.

The best way to navigate on long trips is to use Google Maps with Waze running in the background. Google has the best in-trip nav experience for choosing different routes and Waze pops up warnings about police speed traps. So if it this way gives you the best from both apps.

Hopefully someone posts a video review of iOS 13-CarPlay on a wide screen display like the X7 and tests the following:

Using Waze
Receive a phone call while using Waze
Receive a text message

Agreed.

And how about actually driving the car on a route while showing the navigation system? These guys doing these videos all keep their cars parked and they don't show what we actually need to know. I appreciate their efforts, but they act like everyone uses Apple Maps in a parking lot instead of using Google maps and Waze on the highway.

I've been using bmw navigation so that I get the navigation in my HUD with Waze running in the background to warn about speed traps. Works well for me...

I do that as well and it works well. You'll hear an audible warning when approaching a hazard or if the police are up ahead. I also noticed when you end a CarPlay session with Waze running, Waze will restart automatically the next time you use CarPlay even if it wasn't currently running. Nice trick.

As for mapping software, I actually prefer the look of Apple Maps to Waze (better graphics) but I still use Waze to receive the alerts. If only Apple Maps and Google Maps would provide hazard alerts similar to Waze. No reason they couldn't both provide those features.

Living near a big city with dozens of different road options, the single most important feature in any of the Big 3 maps is Google Maps "pop up" that shows the time variance if one chooses another road.

Shown above on iPhone (it looks the same on iDrive) as I commute on the Northern State Parkway I can glance at the screen and see instantly that taking the Long Island Expressway is only 1 minute longer. Without getting some message or being distracted by fumbling around, I can just glance at the screen and in a split second decide to take the other road.

This is super handy when one road is more familiar to you than the one that the nav has decided to put you on. Can't tell you how many times the nav wants to put me on some backroad or alternate highway when staying on the more popular route only adds a whopping minute or two to the journey.

Only Google Maps has these pop up's and I don't go near Apple Maps or Waze as a result. Using Google Maps for nav and running Waze in the background gives me the best of both worlds....I get the at-a-glance route option from Google and the police traps from Waze and I'm good to go.

The question I cant see an answer to is:

If you use HUD with directions, if you should select another Nav in Carplay is HUD supported or not?

I agree this is very promising. It's sad that I don't even use it on my 5 series and I paid for it.

My biggest dislike though is that I cannot use the car Wi-Fi and run Apple CarPlay at the same time. So I just disabled CarPlay since I rather not use up all my data.
