My biggest question is if Apple Music takes over anytime the device connects, or you get a new alert? I still listen to SXM 90% of the time and this is the single most frustrating thing about CarPlay.

As for mapping software, I actually prefer the look of Apple Maps to Waze (better graphics) but I still use Waze to receive the alerts. If only Apple Maps and Google Maps would provide hazard alerts similar to Waze. No reason they couldn't both provide those features.

Living near a big city with dozens of different road options, the single most important feature in any of the Big 3 maps is Google Maps "pop up" that shows the time variance if one chooses another road.

Shown above on iPhone (it looks the same on iDrive) as I commute on the Northern State Parkway I can glance at the screen and see instantly that taking the Long Island Expressway is only 1 minute longer. Without getting some message or being distracted by fumbling around, I can just glance at the screen and in a split second decide to take the other road.

This is super handy when one road is more familiar to you than the one that the nav has decided to put you on. Can't tell you how many times the nav wants to put me on some backroad or alternate highway when staying on the more popular route only adds a whopping minute or two to the journey.

Only Google Maps has these pop up's and I don't go near Apple Maps or Waze as a result. Using Google Maps for nav and running Waze in the background gives me the best of both worlds....I get the at-a-glance route option from Google and the police traps from Waze and I'm good to go.
Waze has this for awhile now.

I saw a post in another thread that had CarPlay running on ID6 with widescreen enabled. The phone was running iOS 13 Beta. When the beta is made available to the public, which is in July IIRC, I plan to try it out.

I have been meaning to code widescreen (been too lazy lately) but would prefer OEM integration via iOS 13 if given a choice.

Yes, but coding required. I got my iDrive 5 coded to CarPlay Fullsceen and iPhone with iOS 13.

HUD support is the best feature on this list! The others are also fantastic and long awaited!

With Google Maps you get the balloons all the time at every major intersection or highway which is the functionality I’m referring to. All maps do a good job of rerouting around significant delays. I’m talking about when there are no delays and Road X is only 1 minute shorter than Road Y and Road Y is the one you’re most comfortable with. Google let’s you see at a glance that it doesn’t make much of a difference which road you choose so you can confidently go off the recommended route and go the way you prefer.

Not necessarily if your car came from the factory with the CarPlay option. This is the thread I was referring to in my previous post (post #34 in the thread): https://g07.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1620095&page=2

My initial assumption is that the car in this post is NOT coded to turn on ID6 based on who posted it (a BMW Service Advisor alegedly), and came from the factory with Carplay enabled - but I could be wrong. My F80 came from the factory with ID5 w/CarPlay which I have coded to ID6. I want to test iOS 13 Beta to verify if my car, which is coded for ID6 will still be able to enable widescreen CarPlay or if I will need to code widescreen Carplay separately.

I get dotted lines showing me alternate routes with time. Just had it today. And since Waze actively switches you to the faster route more so than google it doesn't need to do it the way google does. Google just keeps showing you every which way to get to your destination which frankly isn't required considering most of them are only 1-3 min difference and usually just "similar time" but hey to each his own.

What you view as a detriment is actually the best Google Maps feature in my opinion.

I have had Google Maps, and Waze for that matter, re-route me off the Cross Bronx Expressway onto local roads in bad neighborhoods in the Bronx. The difference in time was a minute.

I would rather stay on the safe highway than get off the road into a slum in a $85,000 German luxury car in order to save 60 seconds. Unless there is an accident, Waze does not tell me why it is rerouting me. Google Maps, on the other hand, tells me at every major intersection exactly what the time difference is. So if it chooses to put me into a bad neighborhood to save me 2 minutes I can make the decision to take the direct/safer route because I know the delay is only 2 minutes.

“Trust the re-routing” Is a carefree option in rural Virginia or the middle of Maine. But in a busy city like New York, you are literally one or two turns away from a neighborhood in which your vehicle and your well-being are in danger.

Your article refers to iDrive 7 present on the newer vehicles.
My 2017 F30 with iDrive 5, came with CarPlay from factory and does not support full screen. I had to code it in order to CarPlay full screen ..I believe similar applies to iDrive 6 (not 100%).

Looks great. I only hope BMW get rid of the CarPlay failure that currently has on iDrive 7. Each time I start my G05 X5, CarPlay autoconnects whenever it feels like it, connectivity is not stable.

I have iOS 13 beta on my phone and have been using new CarPlay for a day now. I haven’t put in a direction yet but just looking at the map it doesn’t work. I will report back more details soon! Dark mode and the new Apple Music view are the shit

Also , for everyone... I have had absolutely no issues with iOS 13 beta as of yet. Knock on wood. Works really well so far almost as well as 12.

I gave the new beta that was released on Monday and using CarPlay in my 2018 X3. I also have it coded for full screen. It works really well and looks so much better. The one thing I cannot figure out is how to get the satellite view to work or how to get the traffic to work on the maps app. I have them both on in the app itself but it doesn't carry over to CarPlay. Has anyone had any luck with this?

You can load beta 2 right now if you want the developer link to download it OTA... I also heard that the public beta might be coming sooner... next week maybe...

I am almost positive that Apple maps doesn't have satellite view in CarPlay. Do you have your traffic switch on? If you go to the i icon make sure that is checked. I am assuming this works? Can't test it myself until tomorrow.

If that is true about it not working in car play then that would explain it. I do have traffic checked on. I toggled it back and forth a few times and it wouldn't show the traffic on the i-drive screen.
