Buy New 4.0i or buy used M50i ?
Test drove a brand new x7 4.0i. Loved the LCI look but it was $98k msrp. Looked around on Autotrader and seeing CPO 2021 x7 4.0i listing at $64k+ (CPO 2020 4.0i listing at $55k). Definitely confirming a huge drop in value in over just 3 years. Should I shop for a used 2021 M50i for $80k and pocket the change instead of buying a new 4.0i? A part of me wants a brand new car but that depreciation is hard to swallow. Really want to keep it under $100k and a v8 would be nice. OEM has pushed msrp so high during last 2.5 years giving it way more room fall.

https://baxtercu.truecar.com/used-ca...9/2022-bmw-x7/ I bought a similar one (1800miles only, single owner) few months back and was the best decision I made, so far. Last edited by srbabu790; 05-01-2023 at 11:29 AM.. |

In terms of long term ownership, the 6 cyl engine is one of the most reliable engines every produced by BMW. And the LCI gets more power than the pre-LCI on the 6 cycl. A 2021 M50i would be at least halfway through the warranty period, if not more but is a very nice vehicle. At $80k it's not that much off MSRP considering it is a 2-3 year old vehicle (I just traded my '22 40i for $75k, dealer CPOed it and is selling it for $85k). In short, I'd custom build a '24 X7 40i to your specs and negotiate discounts off of that. I was able to stack 3% off + $2k NavyFed + $1k BMW CCA rebate off my purchase. That took my $97,650 MSRP to $94,700 (dealer discount) - $2,000 (Navy Fed) - $1,000 (BMW CCA rebate) = $91,700. |

Yea, mine was not found locally either, 500miles away from my hometown. Well it was worth the trip, since mine had every option I was looking for except the exterior color. But I made a compromise on that after test driving the car.

It seems like most folks here that buy new knows they will eat quite a bit of depreciation (less depreciation on the V8 variants). Maybe longer term, the value of a 6 yr old 4.0i vs a 9 yr old m50i is very negligible and I should just buy which one I like better. |

Also, I think the 2024s will hold value better than the 2023s as no one will want the 'black sheep' year of the LCI in terms of tech and features. '23 was almost an in-between year when the body style changed, but half the tech was not ready. Augmented Reality and Highway Assistant for example did not debut until the 2024. Edit: If you are looking for a Q4 purchase, join BMW CCA on a 3 year membership and you will be eligible for the rebate after 6 months of membership. So if you join today, you will be eligible in November. That $1k rebate on the X7 more than covers the $159 cost of joining, and is entirely separate from the transaction at the dealer. |

My numbers section does not show the MSRP, just the selling price and $2k incentive (BMW CCA is a $1k rebate after the fact). If you want, send me a DM and we can see how I can help.
