Trade in toward X7
My dealership gave me a quote for $20k on my 2016 328i GT. Doing a quick run through Carvana and they quoted me right at $24k.
Does anyone have any tips to try and get the dealership to match Carvana or should I just take it? If I trade in with the dealership I am paying ~1.7k less in taxes on the cost of the vehicle. Since Carvana is giving me 4K more my math says I "make" 2.3k taking their offer. Carvana's offer is right in the middle of the KBB scale. Thanks for any input.

You can do a "convenience" trade where the buyer of your car buys it from the bmw dealership and you can save the tax on the price the buyer pays.

If they’re giving you such a bad deal on your trade, chances are, they’re also giving you a bad deal on your purchase. I’d do some comparison pricing.

My experience has been that the dealership plays a balancing act. They give you a great deal on your trade, but not a great deal on the car, or vice versa. That's why I always spring the trade in after I negotiate the price of the car. They always get annoyed, but not my problem.

It’s as if you are local they will not budge (much), but if they know are far away they know the ONLY reason you will come to them is lowering the price. That same out of state shop probably would not have given that same deal to a buyer in their local area. Besides, the aforementioned obvious, they also won’t be doing much picking you up and washing your car for maintenance. That saves them some $$. I’m like 35- 40 miles from my dealer and at least they will come and get my car, give me a loaner and return it washed and serviced - that’s worth something to me (saves me half a day). I don’t think they’d do that if I didn’t buy from them. Driving us all they way to SC for the PCD was a nice touch too. Beats having had 2 cars to bring back. I only got like $2.5K off, but it was a early order and I’m ok with it.

First - find a fair price for the X7 you want, say $112k on a $117k MSRP.
Second - then say, I can sell to Carvanna for $25k , I save $1.7k on taxes so will you take $23.3 on trade-in? The deal is done if you can do both. Personally, I'm willing to pay a little more to go local. I don't want to drive to pick it up, better service when buying and you always get a loaner when needed. |
