Front Seat Headrests

What's up with the front seat headrests that won't go down all the way flush with the top of the seats? If you look at the BMWUSA website and build an X7 you can see in the photos of the interior that they do go down all the way. But looking at 2020 models on showroom floors they don't nor do they go all the way down in my car either.

See the pictures below of my car and website configurator. The pictures of my vehicle are the two on the bottom. Sorry about the orientation but I give up trying to get pictures to orient correctly on this website.

My seats headrests are as far down as they will go. Doesn't look anything like the website pictures.

Does anyone else have this same issue with their X7's?

Mine go all the way down. They’ve pinched my fingers whilst installing my sons iPad bracket mount several times.

You know they’re electronically controlled at the seat control panel, yes?

Yes. I've raised them all the way up and all the way down but this is far down as they go.

What model year is your X7?

Mine do not go down all the way either. In the past you used to be able to remove the pin on manual operated headrests which would allow the headrest to be flush with the shoulder line. I do not know if the same can be done with these.

This drives me nuts. It would be much more comfortable for me personally if they would move to a flush position. Still comfortable though

Ja, the comfort head restraints in the new G05/06/07 aren't flush with the upper backrest. The configurator rendering is inaccurate.

Compared to my old F15 comfort seats. they seem to sit a bit higher. Back in the old E53 and E70 days, the head restraint design was different and sat flush with the seat.

The bend in the rail and slot allows for a technician to service the crash-activated gas-actuator in the head restraint:

My detailed explanation:
The interior of crash-activated head restraint comprises of complex, spring-driven mechanical operating units activated by a pyro-actuator. As soon as the pyro-actuator ignites, it propels a release stick moving a release plate and setting two adjustment springs free. The springs, in turn, move the impact plate and the head restraint padding both forward and upward. The crash-activated headrests move up to 60 millimetres or 2.36" forward and up to 40 millimetres or 1.57" upward.

I think it might be tied into the middle back hinge seat position when you have multi-contour seats. I have noticed driver and passenger headrests at different relative heights when they were both supposedly all the way down. The forward/back position of the headrest is definitely tied to that middle back hinge, so it might only go all the way down if the middle hinge is forward, back, or center?

I haven't sat in my X7 for a couple weeks since I have only been leaving the house on my own (so might as well take the fun car), but will check it out next time I have to venture into the wild.

No. That's not it either. I thought the same thing and went out to my car and adjusted the seat in every possible position and the headrest will not go down any further that what I posted in my pictures.

Odd. Not cool if the configurator is not showing the actual product.

(including "comfort-enhancing, intentionally placed BMW seat wrinkles")
