Wife got a lag bolt in rear right on Friday. Called dealer to get a road hazard warranty tire and they couldn't get it until Monday. Well adding air was no big deal, we could survive to Monday....until last night when lag bolt flew out and tire was completely flat in minutes. Wouldn't hold air at all,so she drove it home on run flat. I Jacked it up and popped spare on. Good to go. It's a 19" real rim but a 1/3 of the width with a donut tire. There's no way we could've of managed the Sunday routine and drove to dealer tomorrow on a completely flat tire and not damaged wheel. I highly recommend getting this option, it's cheap insurance well worth it. P.s.- 22's are way bigger off the vehicle than on they must weigh over 80 lbs each

Right, that’s why I ordered the spare, even though I’m getting run flats.

You are correct on the weight. I'll be posting a video tomorrow comparing the weight of aftermarket wheels to the factory ones, haha.

I opted for a viair compressor and plug kit. Hopefully that will be sufficient. Swapping these thing out is a PITA!

150 a no brainer for that spare, totally agree

Out of curiosity, does the spare in the X7 eat into the cargo space in the back? (I have the spare in my 540i and I've occasionally had to remove it, because it raises the floor of the trunk, annoyingly taking up about 1/3 of the space that would otherwise be available.)

Naw cargo area unchanged. Not higher, smaller, etc

But the space the spare occupies under the cargo area could otherwise store odds and ends so you do give up a little space there

I have not got spare but will check with the dealer if I can order one now, I hope is not more than the option, I agree when you in the city perhaps tire is not an issue but in the wild spare even with run flats could be quite a life saver

Can’t be added after the fact once your order is final and no further changes can be made to it. Can be added by dealer for about 1k plus depending on dealer OR be ordered from a place like bummer zone for cheaper.

Cheapest way to get it might be to order the one bimmer zone sells without the foam insert. This basically just gets you the tire and wheel, no scissor jack and tools. That costs about 600.

Check with bimmer zone first tho to make sure that spare is the same as in the x7. I believe it to be but haven’t checked for sure

So I was wondering what the factory space saver spare looked like. Looks significantly better than your typical black rim, ugly steel donut.

For the OP, what is the spare tire full size and specs (i.e. 2XX/XX-19) and speed rating? Most space saver spares are designed for approx 50 miles of use at best (compared to a full size spare that came with my current Ford Expedition SUV), but the X7 spare looks a bit more robust at 19" and could probably last longer (not that I would want to drive on a donut any longer than necessary). Also, who makes it?

For those who are curious, below is a link to the space saver spare part numbers, which technically means you should be able to order it from any vendor that sells genuine BMW parts.

Believe it’s a continental cs17 that comes in both the x5 g05 and the x7.

155 80 19 i think, maybe Pipe can confirm.

Those have 60mph ratings or so - tread life variable, but 50-100 miles is achievable from my experiences

The most expensive component of adding this after you’ve taken delivery is the wheel itself. I recall seeing that part having an msrp of 450 or so wheel only no tire (tire is 170 from a tire rack etc)

Definitely an expensive "post delivery" option to add. A quick price check using the part numbers provided for the wheel and jack will set you back ~$600 (I saw $400 for the wheel at GetBMWParts). That does not include the cost of the tire, which I guess is not bad at $170 from TireRack. Makes ticking that $150 block for the Space Saver Spare option a definite no-brainer in my book.

I wonder how many X7's in dealer inventory typically come with this option? The Space Saver spare option is not typically documented on dealer websites or new car search sites like Autotrader based on what I have seen.

Something else to consider is maybe skipping the scissor jack, and buy a decent floor jack to keep in the garage. And then just roll around without the scissor and just lean on BMW roadside and AAA to change it for you if you have a problem while not home

Nah, not for me. While I already have a floor jack at home (and a QuickJack lift among other tools to wrench on cars in my garage) I would rather just use the scissor jack if I were to get a flat on the road. I changed a flat tire on my current SUV with the included jack, and while not as fast (or robust) as my standard floor jack, it was good enough and not that bad. That said, depending on where I am (or where I need to go) were I to get a flat, I have no problem using road side assistance, either from BMW or my insurance company.

Spare tire is Hankook S300
T155/80 R19 114M

And just FYI for those who may not know-Pirelli has a 1 year road hazard warranty and my dealer took care of that for us. There was a $50 charge for labor. We got our first oil change and software update complete at the sane time, so it worked out pretty well.

Not yet on spare but could be very soon
Shall we lower the suspension down before jacking the car? Any electronic setting thru car system before running on a donut? Stability control off? DHP or driving assistance?

Thats a nice looking spare. Kind of reminds me of the Fuchs wheels on the 993s.
