2019 was the first production year, so you can take 2018 off your list.

The late 20's as well as the 21's and 22's were affected by sporadic and unpredictable supply chain shortages where some X7's were shipped without a myriad of features, so it's very case-specific.

Examples:
  • Crystal deletion from volume knob
  • B&W audio (and even HK audio)
  • 3rd row black plastic trim that does not match 1st and 2nd row
  • Apple Car Play
  • Android Audio
  • Wireless phone charger
  • Heated and cooled cupholders
  • Acoustic Glass (this may have been X5)
  • Dynamic Handling Package
  • Executive Package
  • Luxury Seating Package
  • Dashboard touchscreen
  • Elements of the automated driving systems
  • Change of retractable sunroof cover material from alcantara leather to cloth
  • Elimination of iDrive internal hard disk storage drive
  • Gesture Control
  • Night Vision
  • Ambient Air
  • Full Merino Leather Interior colors
  • Rear System Entertainment
  • Laser headlights
  • Display Key
  • Rear 2nd row door puddle lights removed
  • Removal of touchpad capability from top of iDrive rotary control knob
  • Rear cargo shelves (used when 3rd row up) now all canvas material, no more alcantara option
  • Front dash color climate control screen replaced with black and white version, even w/Cold Weather Package
  • LED Panoramic Sunroof
  • Massage Seats

If I were you I'd look for a 2019 or early 2020 model that wouldn't suffer from these shortages. Most have very low mileage since most of us didn't commute in 2020 and you can safe some money that way.

2020 is the year you could get the most options on...by far.

2020 model year was the “GOAT” of the X7 line. Every option and every build material was available. Even the free stuff like 2nd row doors had puddle lights, Alcantara sun shade, etc..

Many 2019 X7s are also fully loaded to the max.

I would also agree that MY20 is probably the sweet spot (I have a MY20 with a Feb '20 production date). After MY20, as was previously mentioned, the X7 was affected by the part/chip shortage issues which caused some noteworthy functions/packages to go missing for a time.

Best thing to do when looking at a used X7 in that model year range is to have the dealer provide you with the build sheet. That way you can see everything that came on the car, not just the major packages, so that you can make an informed decision.

I'm looking at a 2019 X7 xDrive 40i M Sport right now. I have a '18 540, the X7 would be for my wife. It looks like you have a similar X7. How has it been? Any notable issues? Thanks!

My wife's 2019 X7 40i with M sports package now has over 68,000 miles, yes she drives, and yes we also had lots of road trips with kids. The car been nice, reliable and comfortable. Had three issues outside of wear and tear 1) starter was faulting that was replaced by BMW under warranty. 2) rear seat frame would not Latch properly, replacement under warranty. 3) front windshield replaced due to embedded MKAS ?? camera defroster issue. This was a BMW bulletin so it was also replaced at no cost. None of these stranded us and they were replaced by BMW at no cost to us..

I have 19k miles on my X7 and the overall experience has been great and I still plan on keeping my X7 for the long haul. The only minor issues I have had are 1) a software glitch where when I remote start the X7, steering wheel heat and arm rest heat will come on, even though the outside temp is above the set point (or turned off) - still have this glitch, 2) my driver side center console heated armrest has failed (becoming a common thing apparently, will be replaced under warranty).

I had my windshield replaced (due to damage, not defect) and I had a KFAS fault due to a messed up install (the sensor that supports many semi autonomous driving features), but of course the dealer fixed it.

Engine, transmission and overall mechanical wise, my X7 has been very reliable and trouble free.
