Do you buy generic products?

For instance, do you buy the knock off shaving cream that isn't Barbasol? Or the toilet paper that isn't Charmin?

Technically the generic products are identical to the brand names so why wouldn't you?

Here we go down the rabbit hole…..

No, I do not buy generics. And no, they are not the same. And this will be my last contribution to this thread.

Carry on.

Buy both and try them back to back.

Some are the same. Some are definitely NOT. Toilet paper is the #1 through #10 example.

Um no they are not identical. In most cases they are not even close. I definitely don't fault anyone looking to save a buck but I didn't get to this point in life to wipe my bottom with John Wayne toilet paper.

It depends, some products are identical save for the labelling. Some no-names are inferior. Question is too vast.

Most actually are the same. It’s the same toilet paper at Costco for example (Kirkland vs Charmin)

Kroger has a private label agreement with many of the large bands and they’re made in the same factory

It depends on the product, I would rather spend a few dollars more and have peace of mind. Ever buy cheap toilet paper? Only once will make you buy the name brand or you’re just plain cheap.

Just because there is a private label agreement doesnt mean it's the same product. If the volume is enough they absolutely will run another line. Charmin isn't taking a hit to threaten their own brand. They run a line with a product that has been tailored to whatever CWC was willing to pay for.

Very small markets it's more common, because you don't gain the economies of scale and the value of the brand. That is a why you can often find OEM parts that are identical without the BMW branding but identical, because people aren't shopping brake pads at that level

This is coming from an international logistics background.

I'm like the others, the answer is "it depends." Sometimes the generic is good enough, sometimes I want a specific brand. Especially in foodstuffs.

VERY VERY close, but not perfect. The generic tolerances are less. The fiascos we've had over the last several years have ALL BUT been cheap Chinese generics. We've now lost several decent drugs due to their shitty manufacturing.

I like the Kirkland brand toilet paper, paper towels, and eggs. I also have no issues prescribing generic prescriptions for my patients, and I ask for them when my doctor writes an Rx for me.

For most disposable products there is no reason to buy overpriced name brand. In general, I avoid expensive brand name products as you are usually paying for their marketing.

We bought Kirkland diapers (a long time ago) when we had more than 1 kid in diapers. They were the best thing ever.

hmm... can't think of much else. oh... "tylenol" and "ibuprofin". I have no issue doing that generic.

It's a great question, and it's good to reconsider what we buy that might have a viable generic.

There are some supermarket brands we buy (milk, for example), and we take generic prescriptions, but for most products we stick to the brands. When we’ve tried generic, they never seem the same (e.g., generic paper towels vs. bounty).

Yeah prescriptions are a funny one. As long as its domestically produced you can read the ingredients and its all essentially identical.

Some items Yes, some items no. Heinz Ketchup is a must. No generic comes close. But many generic products are okay by me. It just depends.

The one generic product I buy all the time is Costco gas.

Costco gas in Canada is Top Tier gas. I think Costco premium gas is supplied by Husky.

Yes numerous OTC drugstore items and food. Target does not manufacture acetaminophen or package dry pasta.

For most of my needs, generics are good enough. Not much can wrong with basic antibiotics, ibuprofen, htn meds, etc...

You like the Heinz because of all the sugar they put in it. I only use Costco gas too.

I seriously hope you are all using a bidet attachment by now…

We used to laugh at my friends Mom for only buying Costco brand drinks…
