Brake and rotor replacement

My car has 33K miles and I am told by the dealership that I need to replace front wheel rotors and breaks. Cost is $1,500. Looks like this used to be covered by standard warranty in the past but is no longer covered. Anyone had similar experience and is the cost reasonable?

wear items stopped being covered as of ~2017, and they dropped maintenance to 3 years from 4.

each of the front rotors is ~$350 per, or 700 per pair
a front pad set is about $250
sensors and other little bits, figure about $50, so a total of 1000 for parts.
depending on your location, an indy might be able to do it for less on the labor side.

I think you missed the trick by not taking the ultimate care plus coverage which was around $600 or less. The cost seems reasonable.

Thanks guys. This is my fourth BMW lease and I never looked into additional coverage because breaks were previously covered. Good to know for future leases.

This ☝️

A total no-brainer as these heavy vehicles will definitely need a brake service within that time frame.

You might be able to still buy the maintenance upgrade to cover brakes. That is what I did a few months ago. Was $700 instead of the $1,200 that they quoted for front pads and rotors.

Also, you don't need to replace rotors when you do pads. Service departments just like to push that you do both so they can make more $$$.

No question the X7 is heavy, but the rotors and pads are beefy to match. I read frequently about owners of all car brands that go through a set of pads and rotors in 30K to 40K miles and wonder what I'm doing wrong. My G550 (an equivalently heavy truck at 5400 lbs.) has 15K miles on it -- the pads are at 90% and the rotors have no scoring or run-out. G-owners report brake job quotes at $7K, so I admit I don't drive and brake aggressively.

Is there a quick breakdown of what ultimate care 1,2,3,4 cover or the differences between them? cant seem to find it online.

Edit: NVM, seems like the 1,2,3,4 is just additional years added. Is there a sweet spot? Which additional years is more worthwhile?

And I don't see any ultimate care that is $600 or less, the cheapest I see is +1 for $1850

Prices vary by dealer and even by finance managers. lol

I bought the Care+ for our 2020 X7 M50i for $700. When I took delivery of our '23 X7 M60i I had a different finance guy and he said the same package was $1,400. I declined.

Moral of the story, feel free to shop around. Try and the end of the month/quarter when they might just need one more sold to hit a bonus.

I know this is not for anyone, but changing the pads and rotors are far more easier than you think, and it is even easier for the pad only.

Brake is brake, all work with the same principle, a few YouTube videos should get you started.

I have changed quite a few brakes on my previous vehicles, not really that hard, the right tools for the job and a little detail and patient will save you thousands of dollars.

if you're mechanically inclined, this is the cheapest route. pad replacement is dead easy, especially in front. drive out two pins with a punch and the pads slide right out. rotor replacement is just a little harder.

I'm planning on doing my own with parts from FCP euro. not sure how they can manage, but they offer lifetime replacement for all parts you buy from them.
the first set is on you, but when those wear out, you order a new set and send them the worn out rotors and pads, they refund for your order.
https://www.fcpeuro.com/page/lifetime-guarantee

once im out of maintenance im probably going to do oil changes with their kit. and yes, they will take back the oil and used filter

I know someone like OEM parts, that is fine, but IMO they are over priced for what they are.

You should be fine to find some really good pads from your local store or aliexpress for under 50 a pair to put on the X7 and you will never feel any braking differences.

They are just pads and rotor, nothing special.

to each their own in terms of OE vs aftermarket, but for brakes i will personally stick with OE or OEM. with the fcp euro lifetime replacements, the overall cost drops each time you get new parts for free.

Pro tip is to get an aftermarket pad that doesn't throw brake dust like Rick James at a coke party.

Rachel from BMW Tucson gave us a really good price on maintenance package. If you are still shopping, call her ( (520) 990-1488 ) and let her know Divya referred her (BTW, I don't get any $ for referring)

I am only referring because it was a no nonsense transaction and no BS which you get from a lot of Finance managers (regardless of the dealership)

Wiper blades used to be in the standard included maint package but even those moved to Ultimate+. My sales guy gave me U+ for $300 to buy the car in Aug when it arrived early instead of mid-Sept, it was one of the first 2021s out after the MY switchover.

I always get U+ on the family SUV because I don't want to work on it at all.

The current price for BMW Ultimate care plus 3/36K is $700. When OP bought the vehicle it was $600. For my 2023 X7 I got several quotes from different dealers for $600. Everything is negotiable.

I disagree. I think your basing your statements on a particular driving habit/condition. I have 43K on my 2020 X7 and have over 80% left on front and rear pads with no indications of needing replacement for either pads or rotors.

It all depends on the driving habits of each individual. If you ride your brakes, brake late and hard, do lots of stop and go traffic driving, etc. THEN I could see considering the $600.00 brake warranty. Otherwise, park your money in an car maintenance account that earns some interest. You might not ever have to use that money for brakes where if you buy the brake maintenance plan you may never use it but will lose it if you don't use it.

I personally took the bait and wound up throwing away $600.00 since I am no where near needing new brakes. Unfortunately, the warranty/maintenance plan for brakes expired long before I was anywhere even close to needing new brakes.

Nobody ever admits to being a left foot braker, but there are many who were taught to drive that way.

Okay, I might be a little confused then. I thought the car comes with Ultimate Care 3/36. The ultimate care+ (1,2,3,4) is extending the original ultimate care for xxx number of years.

Or is it that the car comes with 3/36 but you can purchase ultimate care+ 3/36 which includes brakes?

This is what I've been quoted (includes brake jobs):

48 months/50k miles $1849
60 months/75k miles $3149
72 months/100k miles $4699
84 months/125k miles $6099

the add on for the 3/36 just adds back the wear items to the 3/36

It's a pro tip if you have some good suggestions for a good pad that doesn't throw brake dust.
