Sunroof shattered.

We've had our X7 for a little less than a month and today while driving down the road the outer pane of the sunroof shattered. Heard a pop but didn't realize it was the sunroof for 5 or 10 minutes when we looked up. It wasn't a loud pop like a rock striking glass. And there is no damage to the glass that I can see. It just spider webbed. Luckily it was only the outer pane and didn't flood the vehicle. From reading online there have been issues in the past. Anyone had this experience?

Something may have feel on it out of a tree, or maybe frozen baby squids (HBO Watchmen reference).

Was driving down the road. There wasn't anything like that around. There is no impact point where the cracks begin. Just completely shattered with no origination point.

I assume it's laminated glass, looks like a problem with an inner layer as the outside pic looks fine. I don't know how the sky glow thingy is done on these but maybe it was not done right on yours and weakened this glass and caused it to shatter.

Hard to tell but it is the outer glass that shattered.

I was going to ask what the outside temp was but I see you are also in Louisiana. Maybe some tornado debris fell out of the sky.

Does the warranty cover this?

This same thing happened in my 2014 X5. They never figured out why, but it was fixed under warranty.

That's like someone tried to do a demo of the glass like Elon Musk did with his truck.

Were you able to repair this under warranty?

I will recommend NOT to remove the glass, take it to the dealership for inspection and replacement under warranty. On my 530e the windshield cracked in the sun, the crack started from the edge and spread, the dealership inspected for any impact damage, as there was none, they replaced under warranty.

Looks like you have the sky lounge LED roof, it could have cracked due to heat stresses, as the dotted laminate can create uneven heat distribution.

Happened to me in a Volvo XC90. Dealer found where they said it originated from and did not cover it under warranty. They said a rock hit it.

Well, it was possible. We had just returned from a road trip where we used a Thule topper. During the trip we had heard something hit the sunroof but didn’t see any cracks. I checked from below and above. A rock must have bounced off the bottom of the topper.

A week or so after I removed the topper I opened the shade for the sunroof and it was partially cracked.
