2020+ X7 xDrive40i Reliability?

Hi everybody,

I’m looking at purchasing either a 2020, 2021, or 2022 BMW X7 xDrive40i - I’m wondering how the reliability is, as ours would have anywhere from 25,000 to 45,000 miles on it, though would plan on keeping it until around 85,000 miles. Thank you!

Garage List
I have a ‘22 X7 40i with 47K km on it. Knock on wood but so far it’s been flawless.

I’ve towed a 5,500pd trailer about 5K km with it as well.

We’re keeping ours long term, investigating extended warranties now.

Hope this helps!

Yup, flawless in our 2022 X7 40i with 27K miles now.

I have zero concern with keeping ours to 100K miles but I have been recently looking at the Lexus TX500 series, thinking about the 550 with plug in hybrid. I know we'll lose some features, but it would be great for my wife who works 5 miles away and she could drive on the electric every day. But honestly, we seem to put lots of miles on our cars since we have a kid in college 660 miles away and another one going soon. Plus, both our families live a few states away. Lexus is great for reliability and long term, I would be more comfortable with it.

But, the X7 has been great so it will be a tough decision!

Thank you! Please let me know if/what warranty you decide to get, I’ll probably be getting that as I’d like to feel good about it up until 100,000 miles

Thanks! Looked at the TX, and to me it felt like a glorified Highlander, and definitely not the Atleast $70,000 for a fully loaded one (that’s before taxes, fees, and dealer markups)

We have a 2020 40i with 69k on it. Its been great with exception of all (4) air springs being replaced at 52k, under warranty. We’ve had a few other odd things fail too, but under CPO.

Would you recommend getting a BMW CPO warranty?

I was super unimpressed with the TX. Materials felt cheap, no wood, uninspiring interior, front wheel drive bias, horizontally mounted engine, etc. Mentioned to the sales person and they pretty much said, you get what you pay for...which is true. Also made the remark that it was a minivan for someone who does not want to say the drive a minivan.

...now the new LX600 was pretty impressive.

Absolutely. It covers the main stuff and provides you unlimited miles too. They also now offer a CPO wrap that I would consider as it extends factory warranty for additional year or two, again with unlimited miles.

Are there different levels of CPO warranty (coverage/how long?) Also how much does it cost? Thank you so much

A CPO vehicle has a CPO warranty that kicks in after the initial 4 year/50k new warranty expires. When you purchase a CPO from a BMW dealer in USA, they can discuss additional options. See link below. They range in price, but since someone else has already taken the first year (or two) depreciation hit, it helps justify the piece of mind, IMO. Expect several thousand dollars.
