First, some people just have the money and probably wouldn't blink an eye when it comes to paying the dealer all the money they ask for if it means they don't have to worry about a thing.

Second, as far as owners being uninformed. Well, that an education issue. Either education on their own or passed down from parents, family, friends, etc. My dad taught me some things about cars, I also learned on my own as it was a passion of mine when I was younger. I've worked on suspensions, exhaust, turbos, wheels/tires, brakes, audio, and so forth. I used books, manuals, internet, trial/error, local shop techs, and such to figure out how to do most everything.

I would also say this is a generational issue. When I was growing up, mainstream cars were pretty easy to work on. Now, not so much. I tried changing the cabin filter in our 2019 X3...it was almost impossible to do as it was pretty tight fit under the glove box. And don't get me started on the fact vocational classes in schools have been mostly eliminated...at least that's my experience with the schools my kids went to.

So, how much should an oil/filter service cost for an M50i? My local dealership advertises on their website that 8 cylinders are $129.99 but I know there exceptions. Taking mine in next week so need to know what to expect LOL.

I called my dealer today to confirm the oil change for my 40i at $99 as advertised on their website and SA said that "promotion" is for vehicles with 60K+ miles or 4+ years. A regular oil change for mine is $195.

I don't see any disclaimer about it. I will call other dealers on Monday to see if that is true.

OP is clearly being taken for a ride by this stealership. Please post the dealership so we can avoid it. I guess it’s either Fremont BMW or Stevens Creek?

I’ve been taking my BMWs to East Bay BMW in Pleasanton and they seem pretty genuine so far. Spoke to the foreman and dealt with multiple SAs who all seemed decent. Paid $150 for my last oil change on 2020 M50i w/ 35k miles and nothing trying to upsell me on.

Specifically for BMW cars I owned from the 2020-2024 era, I did 6 oil changes to date on 4 different BMWs, and the maximum I ever paid was $150 for the annual service as recommended by the manual. Two of these had the V8 engine, one B58, and one B48.

I always did the cabin filter and engine air filter by myself in my home garage though, after I buy it from the dealer or FCP.

A link was given in post #13 that can give you an idea of what some services cost.

Again, if your BMW is still within 60 months service…you won’t be able to pull up your BMW model…but if your BMW has the same engine as an older model the services (especially oil) will be pretty much the same.

Also, the cost of an oil service varies based on how many cylinders you have…or if your BMW requires a special oil viscosity (like the M models).

Click the link in the quote below.

One of the “special” oil service offerings you can check to see if it is being offered by your local BMW dealership:

I'd imagine the engine filter and cabin filter parts alone would be less than $200. Anyone that could use a screw driver / basic tools can DIY both in less than 30mins.

Edit heres the cabin filter located under the passenger glove box
$127

Here is the BMW oil change kit for my X5M. If the dealers are charging $150 for oil service then thats a deal. I started doing them myself only because i hate anyone else touching my car unless they absolutely have to.
$139

Just wanted to remind others that owners with the rear ac for the third row have an additional cabin filter in the rear fender to change. Don’t forget that one if you’re DIYing it.

This is correct. I have known my SA since 2010 and he has a variable comp as part of his pay plan.
