Map Not Updating

Can anyone help explain why my idrive has been updated to the most current version while the map is still 2018 version. I can't find anywhere letting me update the map manually, is the map updated alone with the OS update or separately? My car is 2019 40i

If whatever your version of iDrive you have is like the past versions…the vehicle comes with the original national map. Then the regional maps get updated (for free) while still under warranty…if the region you live gets updated. Sometimes they don’t…see 2nd pic below that had the original 2014 maps that never got any regional updates.

If you want update national maps…at this point you’ll need to either pay for it or look for the free downloads that require a little tech savvy to download from the net and upload onto a USB drive.

Are you sure your regional maps aren’t updated past 2018?

You can examples below from the past…the original map data is on the upper half…but the lower section shows the updated regional map of the roads most likely to be driven on (as well as updated POI info).

If you have the original owners manual binder…check to see if you have a smaller booklet that covers the navigation/communication features of the car. It may have some info that helps explain map updates.

Like what Qsilver7 said, There are two maps in idrive. a base map that contains the entire country, and a more detailed regional map that is only for the region you selected in the BMW connected store (Typically it's the area of your home or wherever you use the car most often). Regional maps updates come OTA every quarter or so. Base map does not come OTA. You have to get the dealer to update it. Depending on the dealer, they may or may not do it for free.

My 2020 came with 2019-1 base maps. Although it was getting the regional map updates OTA every few months, the base never updated. I had some issues with navigation last year so the dealer updated the base map to the 2022-1 version under warranty.

It differs by region. You can sign in to your BMW connected drive account and select which region you want. They divide the US up into 4 regions.

I have a weird issue that my maps update too often since my last iDrive firmware update. This last road trip it kept notifying me that the map was just updated and click OK to restart GPS. I did this a few times and it rebooted the gps but got the same notification almost ever 2 days on my road trip?? I stop clicking “OK” after awhile as I didn’t wanna keep restarting the GPS as I was using it.

I had that issue right after I bought my used X7 and changed the region. It had been on the NE map and I changed it to the South - but it started updating from 2019 through 2023 and it updated by each quarterly map update instead of jumping from 2019 to 2023. It was a process of like a week of that but it eventually stopped when it was the current map. Might be what's happening to you?

That is exactly what is going on and I also changed from NE to the South as I travel that area more.
