Angry New X7 Build - no touchscreen?!

I signed a contract for a 2022 X7 back in August and it finally hit the production queue last Friday. Today I received an email from my CA stating the car would be built without a touchscreen and that while it would still have the live cockpit, I would have to use the regular iDrive to navigate the screen. I find this rather ridiculous. Can BMW not delay the car until the parts are in stock?! What next, are they going to start selling cars without engines or steering wheels? I realize this is sounding a lot like a first world problem, and I suppose it is, but shesh!

BMW needs to terminate their head of supply chain as they failed to come up with proper contingency plans.

Take delivery. Call junkyards/used parts shops and put out a bounty on an X7 or X5 touchscreen. Give it a couple of months. Let the part come to you.

I realize it’s a bummer but honestly, since Jan 2020, I’ve used the touchscreen in the car maybe 3 times???

Yeah, I am curious to know if BMW may be willing to do the touchscreen retroactively, once parts materialize.

I'm with OP, I'd be pretty upset about not having touchscreen on my x7. Crazy times we're living in! If buying a used car built in 2020-2022 you're going to have to check everything out super closely..

Understandably, we each have our own preferences on how we navigate menu systems. I make extensive (daily) use of Apple CarPlay in the vehicle and rely the ability to press buttons for some functions vs. using iDrive or Siri.

Honestly, it would be a dealbreaker for me too.

I hope this is a joke??? If real, obviously you don’t accept a $40k vehicle like this and the idea BMW would even try this on anything above a 2 series is laughable. BMW might as well cancel 7 series productions across the line if this is how they have to make them. Your $80k vehicle is worth $35k as soon as you leave the lot as it will be a toxic vehicle. Resale of 2022 will be pathetic. Buy a mid level Jeep and forget BMW for now.

I believe the answer to that will be yes. Since they aren't charging you for it now, they can charge you for it if/when the part becomes available. The labor costs though...don't know if it's plug and play or very involved. It's worthy of a phone call to your local BMW's parts supervisor.

I was in the market for x7 this year but I am taking a deep breath and going to wait until 2023 or whenever chips are aplenty. Not spending 100k+ to be cursing for next 8 years.

Yup, going to try making some calls tomorrow. I’m hopeful we can fix this aftermarket. But urgh, so frustrating!

I thought the '21 models were having difficulty sourcing parts, but '22 is definitely worse. Since the car is in production, see if you want the car still when it comes because you don't have any obligation if the car isn't built to how you wanted it, if the dealer is offering a significant discount and is willing to take a loss, I might be interested if I am able to get the things installed after.

I wonder if the touchscreen issues are due to the new electric models and BMW giving preference to those vehicles.

I am with MystroX5, I can't believe BMW is removing basic features at this level of a vehicle, might as well get a lease on a premium market vehicle and come back to BMW if this keeps on happening. I wonder if they would remove the double pane glass.

Say what the what now? We've sunk to a new low in the supply chain, that on a flagship X7, they're now removing the touchscreen part of the primary electronic interface for the whole car?

Now, to be fair, I almost never touch the screen. I prefer to keep it clean, no fingerprints, so I use the iDrive controller 90% of the time, voice control over 9% of the time, and use touch less than 1%.

So while I can be realistic about this, it's just shake-my-head sad and pathetic how bad this supply crap has gotten, even on flagship $100k+ automobiles. And the fact that we're even DISCUSSING retrofitting X7's because they're not produced 100% right to start with? Seriously? This is not the time to be buying cars. I feel for all of us.

Yeah. I’d rather not be in this situation and technically the lease of my current X5 isn’t up until May or June, but I wanted to start the process early in the event things get worse. Another thought is to see if I just continue with my lease and possibly work out an arraignment with the dealer to extend it several months more and order a 2023 X7 instead of the ‘22.

Aren’t there some features that require the touch screen? For example, selecting which camera view or the auto camera view in the parking mode. Or the swiping down to get to the valet mode.

Maybe its wishful thinking, but perhaps the dealer is confused? Surprised removing the touch screen wouldn’t require a huge overhaul of the iDrive 7 OS since its designed to operate with a touch screen. Like how if you unplug the keyboard, a computer won’t even boot.

Not necessarily. A computer can be set to boot without a keyboard or mouse plugged in.

They (BMW) could simply have code that only uses the idrive wheel for input and not the touchscreen.

Wow! Crazy times. I would not comprise on a car at this level. I frequently use the touch screen with CarPlay.

Same. I also use the touch screen multiple times a day to engage the backup assistant thingy when backing out of my garage. It’s a muscle memory, place car in reverse, tap backup assist, remove foot from brake.

The functions already work with the iDrive controller. Push the controller down (towards the rear of the vehicle) and you can bring up the valet mode and other features the same as swiping down
