Qi wireless chargers aren't great, they can't come close to what a wired connection can supply. The expectation for the X7's wireless charger is simple- when in use for streaming, nav, CarPlay, etc. it maintains the battery percentage you started with. That's what any wireless charger in the same situation would do.

My wife and I don't use iDrive or Bluetooth at all for streaming or nav. We exclusively use CarPlay. We also never enter the X7 with our phones down to 10% and think the wireless charger will jolt us back up to 50% in 30 minutes. We'd use a lightning cable and a high speed USB adapter if that was our usecase.

The expectation of the BMW wireless charger is that if you get in the car with 75% battery, drive for an hour streaming Apple Music and using Google Maps, that when you arrive at your destination you still have 75% battery. That's as good as it gets for any Qi wireless charger.
Oh believe me, I've been using QI wireless charging for over 5 years in various vehicles, home and office. I know what to expect.
The BMW charger can't even maintain the charge level if I am using navigation or streaming music. On the occasion when it doesn't overheat the phone, it will cause the phone battery to drain at about 2-5% per hour.
I'd be happy with it if it can 1) not over heat phones, 2) maintain battery charge if apps are in use, or 3) charge the phone at more than 1-2% per hour when no apps are in use. But the charger in my X7 doesn't do any of that. But the loaner X5 I had did 2 out of the 3.

This has to be a iPhone issue as I have had about every Galaxy model starting at S8 and up in my BMW chargers without any problems.

I must be real lucky with my last G05 and current G07. I own a lot of Galaxy phones and my little S10E gets carried more in the summer months and it has charged great through it’s leather wallet case.

No sure what you are trying to say ... can you clarify? you mean video affects wireless charging?

my iphone maintains just fine while on the charger, carplaying nonstop.

it's not a high power charger, but those come with consumption and heat concerns you simply don't need built into your dash, so I'm not at all surprised they didn't make the charger more aggressive.

I wonder if they have different QI chargers by different manufacturers installed in these cars.
The same phones that have issue with overheating and charging in my X7 did not have any issues in the X5 loaner I had for 10 days.

In my X7 the charger is horizontal while in the X5 it was vertical.

my iphone heats up a lot occasionally. the heating thing is typically related to what's running on the phone/the phone's uptime being overly high leaving a lot of cruft crap running/etc

You mentioned trying 4 different iPhone 12s and only 1 of them working. I just find it less likely to be hardware related and possibly just a difference on the OS/apps/background processes running at a given time.

Yeah, some apps wake up and get consumption happy once they notice the battery's state has flipped away from 'draining'.

I too have a similar opinion. I'm trying to make changes to different setting trying to find why. If I'm successful, will confirm in this forum

I think there has even been issues/differences with certain build date ranges for the X7, but were you using CarPlay in the X7 and not the X5 by chance? Even if you're using it in both, CarPlay is finicky at best, and often leads to phones overheating every without consideration for the wireless charging.

I had all this removed from my build as well...i'll only really miss the integral active steering. I'll keep an eye out when I take delivery on the 400 though.

I was using carplay and android auto on the same set of phones to try to duplicate the exact (as close as possible) situation for testing.

I love CarPlay and love my wireless charger. Both are game changers for me. Coming from a Tesla x that didn't have either is night and day. I would be so pissed if they told me mine didn't have it. To not have to get a cord out and have your phone sitting on the dash with it hanging around is way better. Especially with what we are paying for these vehicles.

Putting it on that charger makes a difference for sure. I can always tell if I have left it in my purse in the car or taken it out and put it in the charger.

I have never had overheating problems either. If you leave your phone on the seat with the sun coming i, that heats it way more than the wireless charger.

Sorry but I love mine and so glad I have it.

You may be right, so many variables at play:

Phone
OS
OS version
Battery health
Apps installed
App usage
Background services
Case
Case thickness
Car interior temperature
Compartment door position

So I've got a brand new iPhone with a brand new healthy battery running the latest iOS with just a few apps in use and all background data services turned off in a very thin case with AC on 68 degrees and the compartment door open. And, for me, the wireless charger is working very well. Whatever battery percentage I start my trip with I wind up with at the end and that's while streaming music and using GPS the whole way.

Someone with a different phone and different apps who leaves background app refresh enabled with an unhealthy battery and a warmer climate control temperature with the compartment door closed may have a different experience.

It's official. According to the stealership, they said the Service Department can NOT retrofit it. He said if it wasn't built from the factory, there's nothing they can do about it.

He had me take a pic of the pad area. It shows a small icon of a phone in the middle, but there is no battery charging icon in the middle of it. So it's a dud.

Now I have to figure out if my wallet key card is going to work on the pad, if I can retrofit an aftermarket pad and whether the stealership is going to give me $400 plus tax back or the usual double talk like they did during the buying process. A whole other story.

The digital card and the iPhone car key work (hence the phone icon). It’s an nfc enabled pad. I would imagine once the nfc/wireless charging units hit the oem marketplace you could do a retrofit. The current wireless charging units from older models do not appear to have nfc components.

Yep the pad should have this phone icon - if it does you’re good.
