Deciding between the x40i or the m50i

Can someone please shed some light on this. I am not big on driving fast, or driving too crazy, but i do love the way the m50i sounds with the exhaust.

If i get the x40i, i would get full m-sports package, so would like someone to justify getting the m50i.

Its an additional 250 a month for me from 40i to 50i so just trying to see if its worth it. The 40i would be built with all the packages (executive, drive assist pro, etc).

Any thoughts?

40i MSRP is 89k and 50i is 107k.

thanks again.

I am in same dilemma. Fully loaded 40i is like 91k or so. Almost fully loaded (minus DHP) 50i is like ~105k. All these configurator msrp prices. So the price differential goes from 25k on base price to about 14k, assuming similar discounts % and so taking that out of equation.

I’m not a crazy fast driver but I was thinking if I m going to have a 90k car and keep it for a long time …. Is 50i worth it.

I’m sure long term maintenance in v8 becomes more expensive. And monthly insurance is going to be 100-150$ higher … balance it with some extra fun in life.

Eager to hear members response.
Thx

For me it came down to cool factor vs. fuel consumption. I just couldn't justify 20% more fuel burn for the thrill of the 50 in a car that will run the overwhelming majority of my family's miles.

If it was just a weekend driver the calculus would have been different, but then I likely would have gone for a completely different model.

I went with the 40i (fully loaded) specifically because of the long term maintenance and reliability aspect, as well as the increased fuel economy vs the M50i.

Anyone that crowd sources the answer to this question should for sure buy the 40i.

thanks everyone.
This is really killing me. i currently have a 17 month old, and possible another baby in the next year or so. So im thinking that the 50i would be over kill since i wouldnt be driving fast with two kids in the car, unless alone. but...the 50i has a wow factor + sounds/feels sexy.

Correct me if im wrong.

The logical choice is the 40i.

The sexy choice is the M50i.

I think this is the right answer. If you're asking get the loaded 40i.

It was a no brainer for me to get the M50i or higher, I didn't even test drive it. Drove the 40i and instantly knew I needed more power. Grabbed a fully loaded M50i (>$125k MSRP) since I prefer the M-sport look and never regretted it.

I seriously considered the Mercedes G580 and GLS580 as well as the X7s. While being a very long-time MB driver, I liked the BMW X7s more. I selected the 40i because a) the six-cylinder engine is the paragon for smoothness and reliability and b) the acceleration difference was not worth the fuel cost for a “regular” driver.

I love my 2021 X7 40i. I purchased all packages (except the B&W system) plus picked a unique color. In hindsight, I wish I had splurged for the B&W system.

As a father myself, powerful suvs are not important. The 40i is plenty powerful, more reliable(of you’re buying it) and has much better fuel range(less gas station stops). You’re driving around young children, the more relaxed and quieter the better. Get a high spec 40i. Because your kids are so young, the base stereo system is plenty. No need to damage young eardrums.

pretty much.

as far as real differences you can feel go, the added torque makes this short bus feel much smaller compared to the sixer.

this is all assuming you make the correct choice in adding DHP

I would go and went with a 40i. Hopefully will be abled to tune it soon. It's primarily my wife's car and shuffles the dogs and kids around. The b58 with zf8 is super smooth and while you won't be drag racing, it's moves well given the size of the x7. If this were my DD, I'd go 50i...but it's not.

neither of these makes much sense, as both are non sequitur.

Your first step needs to be coding ASD off. There's your sedate, quiet ride. There's absolutely nothing, once you turn off ASD's fake engine noise, loud or aggro about driving the m50i in comfort mode.

In terms of the stereo, the difference between them is not one getting louder. The BW option has better sound quality all across the spectrum, regardless of how loud you're playing your music.

well-optioned is well-optioned, and there are good and bad reasons for choosing among them.

Coming from a Range Rover L322 which was plush but drank fuel like crazy, my wife wanted something of similar size and luxury but better economy as we road trip frequently with the kiddos. We test drove both models which were well optioned and even though we loved both, the 40i just made more sense for her and plus it was optioned better less DHP and night vision. The 40i has a great motor with good and smooth power delivery plus the B58 motor is tuneable as well and proven to be a powerhouse IF desired but then again this is a family hauler that masks speed very well. Ultimately do what is best for your family. Cant go wrong either way provided its optioned to your taste.

Just curious, is the mi50 as quiet as the 40i once cruising? I would have bought the m50i but the fuel range wasn’t long enough as I do a lot of road trips.

A test drive is all that is needed. The two have very different personalities.

All I had to do was turn it on and it sounded great. Bit mpg range is not very good

thanks all this is all great input. I feel like most people here are saying the 40i is for more conscious dads and "wives" vs the 50i is for more like dads with no regrets or have older kids.

Keep the comments coming. Still undecisive, but its looking like the 40 might be the optimal choice, only because of gas. the 40i will get the Mpackage anyway, so it would look like the the 50i but feel like the 40i.

Given the current inability to add options (laser lights, HK sound system, DHP, etc.) to the 40i due to part shortages, I am leaning towards 50i... Both are great choices!

I hear that! I decided to lease the 40i because of the base sound system. Had it come with HK, I would have it out right with excitement

I do serious cross country family road trips from Pa to Florida. The V8TT was never a issue with range of fuel. We even did 1100 miles in one day.

Ecco pro feels like a wet sponge on the go pedal but it’s tolerable with so much HP on tap. We used it a few times while pounding miles on adaptive cruise.
