Wheel Alignment Necessary
The SA told me to replace 4 tries and also do a wheel alignment along with it, which cost about $279. I questioned why need to do alignment, and they explained that because this card does not do tire rotation so a wheel alignment is necessary. Is that so, and what's your opinion?

I had uneven wear on rear tires (when inner edges were more worn out than outer ones) so I got the alignment done with the new tires installation. If you don't have this problem then you may not need alignment at this time.
Also, many people on this forum (including me) recommend tires rotation on square setup. X7s are known for eating rear tires much faster than fronts. So rotating them regularly will help avoid uneven wear between fronts and rears. |

I still believe it's the suspension geometry that causes tire wear. I had substantial tire wear, had multiple wheel alignment done, some within a week of each other. I remember looking at the reports and the changes in alignment were so insignificant, they made no difference. And, every time SA came back with it's up to spec, and every time when I brought the car in for service I was told that because of the uneven tire wear I should do the alignment. At some point I decided that for most part, alignment at the dealer is a cash grab. Maybe find a good tire shop that's able to do a 4-wheel steering alignment (not just a standard 4 wheel one) and see what they say.

The dealer asked for wheel alignment required for the tire packaging deal of buy 3 get 1 free, the wheel alignment is very expensive pretty much offset whatever the tire cost saved. Some technicians claimed that alignment is mostly unnecessary for most of city driving.

Ha. Maybe if you had uneven (side to side) tire wear then an alignment would be needed.
I had mine at the dealer for repair of the 3rd row recline. SA noticed my rear tires were pretty worn. I had already knew this and am planning to replace this summer. He recommended I replace the two rears and then highly recommended an alignment because with the new tread depth it would throw the system off since it wasn’t even with the front. Let’s just say I decided to pass and told them to stick to the repair. Seems to be an opportunity for them to upsell. Kinda like a diagnostic/code scan/clear when your car is out of warranty. |

New to X7s, but why don't we rotate the tires? I understand that most have staggered setups, but if the tires aren't directional, can you swap fronts and rears side to side?

I guess those who have had uneven tire wear problems rotate them regularly now, including me 😂. Also, rotation is required for warranty purposes by some brands/tire shops.

I just had my X7 in for service at 12K miles and they recommended wheel rotation. I showed them completely even wear on all four tires and they agreed it wasn't necessary. I suspect some automatic recommendations on service visits are revenue driven.

Nothing beats a Chrysler service advisor foaming at the mouth and swearing on the honor of his cat and her kittens that my air filter is dirty and needs replaced ASAP. I would almost believe him, had I not personally replaced it the day before.

i feel dumb for paying $249 for an alignment at my last visit, but i just reached 20k miles and the rear treads are running low and i figure i will be replacing tires soon so maybe an alignment is a good idea anyway. (and of course the SA has been suggesting it since the last visit)
nothing was wrong with it before, the wear isn't uneven or anything. no pulling while driving, etc. but i did hit a huge pothole a few months back that scared the crap out of me and i was shocked it didn't damage the tire or wheel. just seemed like maybe every 2-3 years is probably ok to pay for an alignment to make sure it's not a little off and ruining tires prematurely

One thing that bugs me, with all the vehicles I had in the past, none of them required wheel alignment. X7 apparently required 2 so far, and it's still eating my tires and is squirrely as cat on catnip. Something about suspension geometry is off, or the 4WS is causing some weird behavior.
