2023 BMW x7 Xdrive40I DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION

Hello everyone, I purchased my first 2023 BMW X7 and truly love the car. Coming from Mercedes it is a different car in so many ways. The Odometer just hit 1000 miles and the car died on us yesterday leaving our house. I am truly shocked that such a new car would have such issues. The message was Drivetrain malfunction and to drive to the nearest dealership. Unfortunately it would not drive 1 inch and then it would turn off. Anyone else have these issues ?

Wonderful… you are not the only one. Poke around this forum. You will see what I am talking about.

I am hopeful that there was just a bad batch of these.

I have 1,300 miles on mine. No issues. Although that sounds like it could change as this issue is becoming more common.

I’m telling you right now that if mine strands me then I’m trading it immediately.

I’ll take the financial hit and will move on.

I have never had a vehicle strand me and I’m not about to go down that road at this point in my life.

Hey, you may want to edit this thread title to read Drivetrain malfunction message and other users will chime in. The thread title here is just a little generic.

Also am curious to know the following.

Did you order this vehicle or buy it off the lot?
When did you purchase it / how long have you had it.

Sorry to hear! My impression is that the drivetrain malfunction warning is fairly nonspecific and can be triggered by a number of underlying issues. It looks like there are at least four other members who are dealing with this currently - LCI with < 700 miles. I have copied them here to see if a common thread can be found...

@the_wolperting (2023 X7, 675 miles, 11/2022, ?engine)
@DancyQ (2023 X7, 200 miles, 8/2022, 40i)
@Setllarboss (2023 X7, 245 miles, 40i, message disappeared)
@AM (2023 X7, 300 miles, ? engine)
@Davidhardy (2023 X7, ?engine, "various computer errors")
@itiongo (2020, X7 fuel pump)
@Bigjoe17 (2020 X7, m50i with 25k miles, fuel pump)
@THinthedesert (2020 X7, m50i, 30k miles, fuel pump)
@Fegelein (2019 X7, ?engine, 2500 miles)

Same here...that's why I'm hesitant to buy one. I don't think I can cope with this...

You really gotta wonder about software engineers who write code that disables a vehicle's mobility, and then displays a diagnostic message telling you to drive to the nearest dealer for service.

That reminds me of internet service providers. When I call to report that I have no internet...the automated system proceeds to give me the website address where I can search for issues! Hello..I said "No internet" LOL

Wow another 2023 gremlin issue …. What is BMW doing?! Sorry to hear but as others have said above it's getting more common as you look through the forum. Curious as to the root cause of this issue that keeps leaving people stranded.

Are there any LCI m60i affected by the drivetrain malfunction?

As others mentioned that error is generic. But I am curious on why the vehicle turns off and won't move.
Would you be able to give more info on that?
I know in certain conditions when a door is not locked or hood is open, car is supposed to turn off if you try to engage into gear.
Also did you remote start the vehicle before you got into it?

I know it's frustrating to see a 100k car bail on is.

With the mild hybrid integrated into the transmission, it could be the dastardly 48 volt lithium battery being flagged as a drivetrain malfunction. Keep us posted on the dealership's diagnosis.

BTW, have you tried restarting it?

Tried multiple times to restart it . 3 times I tried until it just stopped firing whatsoever. I will keep yall updated. Monday they will give me an idea on what could be the problem and I'll pass on the information.

Following along

I had a X3MC back in 2020, which stranded me and family with a Drivetrain Malfunction error, left in shop for months and I finally sold it at peak price. Now I’m shopping for a larger SUV, looked at Lexus Benz and Tesla. But back to BMW and I can’t believe I’m seeing this thread.

I find it odd that every time a drivetrain issue is reported and someone asks if it's a 40i or M60i nobody ever answers.
I asked a similar question in another thread and didn't get a response from the OP.

Not sure if affected owners don't think it matters, but it does...different engines, different issues.

Please post if it's a 40i or M60i so we all know.
