That's what the running boards prevent. I had them on my gls and people hit running boards first before hitting the car. I'm surprised why they are not available on X7.

The X7 does have the option for running boards, I have them on my X7. Although, based on the location of that hit, I don't see how the X7 running boards could have prevented it. But then, I am not confident the running boards would prevent most, if any, door dings from occurring on the X7.

Too bad BMW won’t allow you to order the running boards from the factory on the M50i if you wanted them. While easily retro-fitable by the dealer, it will definitely cost a lot more than the $400 running board option from the factory…

I was lamenting my lack of ability to order the running boards, then I got my first loaner x5 when my x7 was in for service.

welp, there went any bad feelings I had. the running boards are nice and all, but they're just not convenient and make skipping them a pain in the ass

Agreed some accessories after the fact are cost prohibitive.

For me it's preference. It "supposedly" is better in cutting through fog. I just like the way it looks.

Beauty and the Beast!

Wife hates it when we drive to school separately. Says it is obnoxious but gives me good opportunities to take pictures side by side.

Editorial note: I am not parked in a Fire lane; the rule is that I can't park over the red line.

X7 and running boards

I went and test drive X7 today. There were 2 of them parked side by side, one with and without running boards. We got I. And out of both. I’m 6’1 and my wife is 5’9. When we both exited the one with the RB, it was an instant reaction from both of us - we didn’t t like it. It hit our calf areas on the legs. Some one had mentioned in another thread how they get their pants dirty and now I know what they meant.

IMHO it s a poor design on the BMWs, probably an after thought.

Just my 1.5 cents.
