I have a no-resonator Y-Pipe with my BMW PE (so other than the PE muffler, the only restriction is the stock DP). And I think it sounds lovely. It is loud on cold starts, but not obnoxiously so (just don't ask my GF).
During driving I think it is just the right volume, and I don't get drone except at a few limited RPM ranges, and only when under light load, but even that I don't find annoying at all. No rasp whatsoever.

What is the rest of your exhaust? Stock?
If so, I think you would get a nice bump in sound. Pait that with a golf-tee mod, and you are all set.

I have the PE muffler installed only. I didn't install the res-deleted mid pipe for fear of drone. The muffler alone provides improved bass tones.

With stock DP, I don't think drone is an issue, except in transient RPM ranges (about 1800-2100) under light load, but I have not found it annoying in the least. But, peoples' sensitivity to such things is a huge variable. I for one am happy to have no resonator.

This is assuming we are talking about N55 with no secondary cat. If you are N54 and have a secondary cat, you REALLY don't need a resonator.

I also have the no resonator y-pipe with the Performance exhaust and think it sounds great. I really don't have any drone to speak of. The no resonator y-pipe definitely adds a little volume to the sound.
