Unable to lower 3rd row right seats

Hi,

I'm unable to lower the right 3rd row seat, just get the warning chime and a message on the dash saying. 'Rear right seat movement restricted'. All other seats move around fine.

Anyone come across this?

Thanks

Yes, it's pretty common... poor design.

I find that if I pull up on the strap that releases the headrest a few times, or do it while it's initializing the process, it will often work it's way out and go down on it's on a few times before it is an issue again.

Mine hasn't been too bad, but it happens probably 30% of the time. I don't play with them often, so a minor annoyance, but at some point I have to remember to tell my SA.

Here's a SB on the issue thenew3 was kind enough to provide. My issue is likely the routing of the Bowden cable:

Do you have car seats in the 2nd row that are anchored? Do you have the rear window controls disabled? I had same issues with 3rd until I undid the anchors before doing anything to the 3rd row. I also enable the rear window controls before I touch the 3rd. I reenable after I am done

So I have a child on the opposite side via the seat belts not isofix.

I have the rear window controls enabled

Hey, are you referring to the headset straps on the 3rd row seats? Don't think I've ever noticed them, are they hidden at all?

Not sure if the rear controls disable the 2nd row movement, but when you adjust the 3rd row, the 2nd row has to move forward to make room if it is all the way back

Yes. They're not hidden. You could see the strap in the diagram of the SB at that link. They stick out a good couple inches.

Is it a big job? Require parts from Germany (like most things)?

I just took my 2021 X7 (4K miles) in for this very issue yesterday. Parts are in order and I'm told it's a "big" 1-2 day job.

My left rear 3rd row is going on for this. Started to act up in the fall. The headrest wouldn’t flip down when pushing the button but if I manually pulled it down, the seat electrics would fold flat. Now the seat is jammed in the upright position regardless of manually lowering the headrest.

I had this issue almost immediately on delivery. They had to order the Bowden cable which took about a month. Fixing it took 2 days if I recall. Haven't had an issue since, but I rarely use them.

The third row for me is mainly for carrying luggage on long trips. No one ever sits in the third row.

I forgot to add follow up on the fix. This is so common there is a TSB on it. You will know when you will soon have this done when your 3rd row head rest starts to not drop easily when you lower the 3rd row seats. My headrest started to stick and I would manually pull the release strap under the one head rest that wouldn’t drop and the power seat would lower. Eventually even manually lowering the head rest, the one seat would not lower at all. This is when the TSB fix is required. Everything looks and works great now. Be aware the service department will have to order the parts in after first diagnostic. 1/2 day in the shop for first diagnostic and I took my X7 home to wait for parts to come in. Parts took 3 days to come in. The actual seat fix with new Bowden cable is 3/4 of a day.

Here is what my service department found and fixed.

Depends how many times you lower the 3rd row I would think. I didn’t lower my 3rd row many times at all and it started a year after ownership for me. If you use your third row a lot, I suspect it’ll happen within the first couple months if it’s going to happen. Some here had this done within the first month. For me and my use of my X7, I need the cargo space for trips and I dont ever take more than four passengers at one time so my third row is down most of the time.

Just watch to see if the 3rd row headrest start to get sticky or delays dropping after you push the lowering button. If it’s starts this, then just plan on a scheduled service when it’s convenient because it’s going to have to be fixed. There is a lot of internal complicated movements to lower the third row seats and all of these movements have to happen in a specific order. If the headrest doesn’t drop right away then the rest of those operations can get jammed or confused and the rear seat won’t lock, sensors won’t trigger, etc….

Across every year. I believe it’s the way they route the Bowden cable in manufacturing. Why they don’t change this routing by now is anyones guess???

At this point I assume BMW has bigger fish to fry by trying to see if the customer notices milk crates as rear seats and if a $200 credit is acceptable.

How did you ever find out about the problem if the 3rd row is down all the time? Mine are down all the time.

Do we all need to lower and raise our 3rd row seats until it fails to get this covered while still in warranty? Otherwise, you know it's going to happen the one time I need to raise the 3rd row AFTER the warranty runs out.

I was detailing my leather in the fall while the weather was warm and getting ready for a long cross country trip this winter. Thank goodness I got it taken care of before we go.
