there are way way way too many variables on regular roads for the car to drive itself without wrecking.

Not really...

1. Use the navigation system for a point of reference while using the automated system shown in the video. The car can then use traffic guidance to find the quickest route while maintaining the legal speed limit (given that the database has all of this information).

2. Use the active cruise control that actually brakes the car when it sees an obstruction ahead (Mercedes S-Class has refined this).

3. Lane departure guidance already exist. Use the same technology to move away from road obstructions such as potholes.

4. Lights are automated. So are the wipers.

The technology already exists. Cars can be driven by themselves easily while at the same time, manual override can be initiated at any point in time. The only reason why automakers don't do this is because of liability issues. People will sue if something went wrong. At the same time, there is always the margin of user error.

you're right that all these technologies would allow the car to drive itself, however what you forget is that the car won't be able to see ahead and think ahead like a human driver would. i bet there are times when you see another car on the road and know already what he is about to do before he does it, thus already adjusting your position. the bmw would have to wait until the action is made by the other driver to then take action itself. also, how would the car recognize speed limits? there are many streets that have different limits on different sections and even those can be changed by traffic workers and cops on day to day basis. if the driver has to manually override the car every time something like this happens, then it would just be a hassle. btw i agree that it would be a great liability issue. there are just too many idiots out there.

If that was true then a lot of the videos would be under "General E90 E91 E92,etc forum"

But they're not. Its a video after all and belongs in the "E90/E92/E93 Video Gallery"

You're both right... we have the technology to have cars drive themselves... the only problem is actually implementing it, and it must be implemented on ALL cars... that's the only way to avoid accidents... if your car is the only car that drives automatically, you'll get in a wreck, no doubt... but if ALL cars have the same driving logic, then the cars themselves could "anticipate" other cars' moves...

very true. however i'm still curious as to how they will solve the speed limit issue. also, i get how the cars can communicate if they are all driving automatically but how would a car that's being driven manually communicate its intent if the driver does not signal.
