Oil Service DIY
Wanted to change out the oil at 1k miles. Has anyone done this service themselves? Should be pretty routine, but wanted to check as far as filter parts, etc. If not, I may just embark on this and post a DIY!

And I would not bother changing it at 1k unless you want to do it because the other post on needing to change the oil ASAP. You'll most likely have problems with the cooling system, turbos, or fuel injection far before the rings or bearings wear out. |

Changing out the oil at the ~1200 mile mark as part of an engine "break-in" service is not a bad idea. BMW makes it a requirement on the engines in the M-cars (and is covered under the maintenance plan). But I would still probably do it on a non-M engine as well just as a good maintenance practice, especially if you plan to keep it for the long haul.
That said, the job looks pretty easy - as any oil change should be. I have never seen the oil filter on a BMW engine on the bottom of the engine though (which I guess is unique to the N63 : ). Only special tool you should need is the oil filter cover removal tool which can be purchased almost anywhere - and appears to be the same one BMW has used on their engines going back many years. But damn, 10.5 liters of oil is a lot....

You press on lower switch and hold for 7 seconds and release. Green light is supposed to go out confirming it is temporarily disabled. Repeat to reactivate. It's under air suspension on idrive manual.

Good info - Just saw it:
Wheel change Before a wheel change, deactivate the system: Press the rocker switch forward or pull it backward for approx. 7 seconds. After the rocker switch is released, the LED indicator on the rocker switch will go out. Activating the system: press the rocker switch forward or pull it backward for approx. 7 seconds. After the rocker switch is released, the LED indicator will reactivate. |

In my original post I did not explicitly say this, but the X7 M50i is NOT an M-car with an M engine (among other M specific components, like suspension and the differential for example, that distinguish M-cars from non-M cars). Only M-cars have the 1200 miles service called out, which includes the M2, M3, M4, M5, X3M, X4M, X5M, etc. For current M-cars, the 1200 mile service includes changing the engine oil and differential oil. Whether or not BMW will make a true X7M is yet to be seen, but that is a different conversation ....
That said, treating any non-M BMW to the additional maintenance practices that are used on the M-cars is not a bad thing either (especially if you intend to keep the car for the long term), even if it is not part of the BMW covered maintenance plan. I did a 1200 mile oil service on my X7 40i (not the differential though), even though I had to pay for it out of my pocket - which is not that expensive (especially when you DIY like I do). Hell, my local dealer has oil change specials at least quarterly, like $49.99 for an oil change on any 6-cyl BMW ($79.99 for 8-cyl BMWs) which makes an oil change at the dealer a no-brainer (I just took advantage of this same special for my M3 not too long ago). Your SA should have been able to tell you this about your M50i without the need to check the system, iDrive or otherwise. But the SA's lack of knowledge of stuff like this is not surprising unfortunately (and pretty common)...

I decided to give the BMW Genius a call and see what's up. Apparently there's a difference in the functionality of the Android and iPhone apps. The iPhone app has the separate option for viewing the state of the doors, windows, sunroof, and trunk. So, if you parked the car and walked away you can look on your iPhone App under "Doors and Windows" and it would show you if any doors or windows were locked/unlocked/rolled up/down. This feature is not available on the Android app. That's unfortunate as this is a very valuable feature. Especially being able to see if we left a window rolled down or the sunroof open. On Android we can only see if the vehicle is locked/unlocked. We cant see if any of the windows are rolled up or down. As a side note, I did learn how to reset the telematics on the vehicle. To do this you press and hold the volume button for 70 seconds. This a different process than the 30 second reset iDrive option. When you reset the telematics by holding the volume button in for 70 seconds the iDrive will reboot 3 times instead of once. So the key to resetting the telematics is to hold the volume button in until iDrive reboots 3 times. After doing that you should also update the apps which takes about 3 times as long as it does normally. Good to know information. |

This is unfortunate to have difference based on mobile platform. Is there any indication that both will have similar feature at some point?

I'm not holding my breath that I'll hear anything back from BMW on why one has it and the other doesn't. I'm guessing there may be some security issue between the two platforms and maybe android isn't up to the security level required by BMW where the iPhone is. Just guessing... |

BMW has always had a preference for Apple for some time. But maybe with the recent addition of Android Auto, that may change....

There is a great step by step in this thread. It tells you you’ll need a oil filter canister (not cap) remover but doesn’t specify the size or dimensions of the remover. So either guess or try to get a universal remover.
