Hey,

My brake service note came up, front and back. Car has 26000 miles.
My bmw dealer quoted me $1900 and $1400 for M brake service, pads, rotors, calipers, front & back.

Does that sound reasonable? Do I need all 3?
Anyone have ballpark price from independent?

Thanks
Chris

I'd at least call a reputable Indy mechanic for a quote. In most cases they are 20-40% cheaper than the dealership.

Downside is you probably won't get a loaner, but these days the dealership might not either. lol

Why would you need calipers? I bet you can get away with just changing the pads! This is crazy!

Are you sure the pads are worn down to replacement level? Could just be the service reminder. Pads don't need replacement unless you actually have the red brakes worn warning as a result of wear pad sensor tripping.

Doubt they are quoting new calipers, so that price seems high, but typical for dealer. An independent shop can do it just as well, including just a simple rotor inspection vs. replacement.

I don't think it covers calipers and rotors. But as others mentioned, would be good to verify that change is needed. You would have been grinding for a while if you need these repaired.

26K miles seems low for that amount of work required. I have a 2019 with M brakes / 41K on it. Just had it in last week and had them check pads and rotors, which were still in good condition. I don't drive it that hard and most of my miles are highway, but based on the amount of wear, I expect I should be able to get at least another 15 - 20 K out of the pads.

Have 45000 miles on my 2019 X7 and just had the brakes replaced. Did purchase the plus care package for $600.

Dealer replaced all rotors and pads with OEM Msport parts.

Crazy to think that the rotors would need to be replaced already. Unless they were warped or something that seems like a short life span.

That's always been the way with German cars. Rotors were designed to be replaced at the same time as pads.

I say take your 2 grand and you 2019 and go to the BMW dealer and get a 21 or 22. That 19 will NEVER bring what it will today! I suggest the Alpina XB7. Most impressive vehicle I’ve ever owned and that list is rather extensive.

I had just the rear pads done on my 750 a few months ago. Dealer wanted $850 but we negotiated down to $600. Nowhere on the work order was rotors listed.

End quote was $2500. Spent some time negotiating. Got a good deal for the care+ 2 package. $3000 that covered the breaks and hopefully the next breaks as well.

Befriend a good independent mechanic shop.

You'll save enough to get go on vacation or get your significant other something nice.

I would never get my brakes done at the dealer if it wasn't under the maintenance warranty. It's a really easy job that any independent can do. Hell, I just did all 4 front and rear pads and rotors on my M3 and it took me less than 2 hours by myself. With a lift, a dealer can swap these things out in an hour if they really wanted to.

The front and rear pads and rotors are about $1500 for the parts (our cost not theirs). I feel like its always one of the biggest rip offs I see from the dealer.

Rotors are out of stock, but pads look reasonable, even for M-Sport.

This is from RockAuto.

Not correct. Typically, rotors can survive two changes of pads, but sometimes they are below specs towards the second set of pads. In Europe BMW usually is changing rotors every second change of pads.

Since I am towing a heavy trailer, I always change the pads with rotors.

Every german car I've owned (in the US) recommended replacing rotors with pads. (roughly 30+ cars thus far).

A few times I tried to go cheap and only replace the pads. Shortly after, got vibration when braking and had to replace the pads yet again with new rotors. So never skimp out, just do them both at once to save the hassle and added expense down the road.

I don't disagree. Bottom line is that technically you don't need to change rotors and pads, if rotors is thick enough (need to measure, visual inspection is not enough). I warped rotors on the second set of pads and since then I change both at the same time.
