The turbo swoosh is hardly audible in this car. I think AS is piped in more in the higher revs to give it more of an induction-like howl instead of a swooshing sound. This of course is the interior since active sound doesn't play out through speakers in the tail pipes. Roll down the window while winding it out next to a barrier and then come back and complain about the sound.

It's really become a sad trend on the forum. I could not imagine spending this much time on a forum of a car I don't own just to point out how much I don't like it when I don't even own it? I will never understand why people like this exist but there are so many of them? Just look in any dyno # thread and they pop right up.

Yep. 90% of the negative threads in this forum are started by people who do not own an F8X.

- Anyone disappointed in blah, blah, blah
- Anyone having trouble with blah, blah
- Who is regretting blah, blah, blah

Really gets old ... and interferes with meaningful discussion about the F8X.

And it's all done under the umbrella of "the forum is to discuss positive and negative views about the car to inform people" but all these people post are negative things and they don't even own the car and have zero desire to buy it? Why not just spend your time on a forum of a car you DO like where you can at least post SOME positive things? Are there any psych majors here that can look into these people's well being?

If anyone believes the Bmw 2-3% of sound is fake number, then you should probably believe the m3 ran a 6:30 around the 'ring.

I have yet to read reliable feedback from someone who coded the sound off about the difference.

I know schmitzna did it, looking forward to his feedback. Seems to be a reasonable and objective guy with this stuff.

For those of you who say you can't hear 2% or its impossible, then why did BMW do it? I think the sound can at times sound artificial, but it does have a nice guttural draw to it.

Because it has to be more than 2%, I dont mind it at all but doing something like this for 2% makes no sense.

Agreed. Or at the very least let us turn it off if we want, without have to resort to coding or ripping out trunk panels to get to the plug.

So, I suppose BMW could be lying. Stranger things have occurred (although they must not be lying about HP rating, just sound ). Maybe, just maybe, it is only a small amplification of engine noise and 97% of what you hear is real engine and mostly exhaust noise? It might be a conspiracy theory, it might not be. So, whether it is 3% or 80%, BMW has also stated that it is an amplication of the engine's induction noise which is different, I believe, than what they did on the M5.

People can draw their own conclusions but, IMO only, anyone who says they can distinguish the active and non-active sound in the car is either dreaming or think they can only because they know it exists. This is different than liking the sound. Whether I like the sound or not, I, for one, could not separate the real part from the amplified part and I'm betting most that say they can aren't truly able to. BUT... I've been wrong before and may possibly be wrong again

Here is a link that quotes BMW... http://www.motoringresearch.com/news...eal-0513943059

For those who would rather not click through, here is a cut and paste

Quote:
“The engine note in the cabin is largely pure,” said BMW M head of project management Carston Pries at the international launch of the new M3 and M4. “The electronic noise is minimised and only makes up 2% to 3% of the sound you hear.”

Critically, there will also be no artificial sound generation – the electronic noise (which BMW calls Active Sound) will instead simply be a real-time amplification of induction noises actually produced by the engine.

Instead of relying on electronic overlays for the audio fireworks, BMW M has engineered in ‘pure’ noise from the exhaust instead – and it’s the addition of two actuators on each of the twin tailpipe sets that’s responsible for most of this.

When activated, these bypass the rear silencer, making the back box almost completely straight-through. “They are active whenever the car is in Sport or Sport Plus mode, or when the revs are above 4,000rpm.”
Don't get me wrong. This is NOT me defending the quality of the sound as that is subjective. It is me challenging those who say they can hear non-amplified vs. amplified components of the sound. If you can say you hear something "artificial", what does that mean? What is an artificial sound and how do you know it isn't the actual sound of the engine/exhaust? Maybe you don't "prefer" the sound and therefore deem it artificial but I'd love to know how anyone can distinguish.

But, hey... it might be that BMW is lying and it is a conspiracy and the amplification component is 25%?

P.S. Great result for the M3 getting a 6:30 'Ring time!!

In this I have to say I enjoy the 100% natural sound more than anything. HK plays my favorite boys with passion often needed in the school zones.

Sir, I applaud your taste in music!

Forget them - I love my new F80. Sound, power, handling, interior, everthing... Is the car perfect in every conceivable way? Maybe not, but for my budget and my needs, there is definitely no car out there that can touch it...

If I didn't have kids - then yes!!! (Went from an E93 to an F80 - largely because kids a lot bigger now than when I bought the E93 back in '08)... Plus the extra fifth seat is huge now with picking up kids from practice/school and needed to take an extra kid every now and then...

But if I wanted a 2 door.... then you have a great point....

FWIW, I try to judge it on the result. It is hard (because I have read enough so I know it is there, so I can't be truly blind or neutral) but, on balance, I like the sound. Turbos have some great characteristics (the snaps, pops, etc) and this doesn't hurt those. Maybe it enhances it all at a subtle level, but I'm ok with the result.
i think turbos can sound pretty cool. the problem is that BMW and other "luxury brands" try to hid the turbo sounds.

unlike pagani

I need one. NOW
