Also no abnormal marks on my rotors. No gouging or anything.
i had this experience on a car with brembos, low speed cold weather squealing. it was the pads rubbing the pistons. a thick coat of crc brake quiet stopped it. its basically the same as the adhesive pad that bmw is using. thats why i suspect the bonding pads have failed on your pads.

The high-pitched squeal is caused by vibration of the brake pads. The solution is to remove the pads and spray "Disc Brake Quiet" on the backs of the pads and reinstall. This will eliminate the squeal and problem solved.

I have not called the dealer, nor have I pulled the wheel and inspected the back. It hasn't been terribly cold and while still present, is nowhere near as bad as that video that I recorded.

I did "seat" the brake pads based on some posts I read a while back. Maybe that helps, I dunno.

For the time being I barely have he brain capacity to deal with this. Having approx 39k miles, however, I feel I need to do something before year-end to preserve any shot at a warranty claim.

Just dropped off my 21 M50i due to squeaky brakes. My SA said BMW has been difficult about getting the squeak noise addressed under warranty but said he'll do what he can. If it's as simple as spraying, hopefully they'll do it under warranty. I will keep you guys posted.

I highly recommend bedding your brakes.
A couple good resources here—-https://m.tirerack.com/tires/tiretec....jsp?techid=85

Quick update - front brakes are still good after 26k miles and they "cleaned" up the brakes but the awful squeal persists. They said it's just part of having M brakes. I guess it will eventually go away when I replace the brakes and they properly bed my them.

Same model, same thing happening. Just went out in this pre-blizzard weather just now and the squealing was super loud. Tires also made a lot of grumbling on the snow 🤦🏾*♂️

I am also in Chicagoland myself and this cold temperature definitely makes things worse. This is my wife's truck and now I am actually embarrassed with folks staring at our car as we squeal to a stop

Dealer supposedly made an attempt to do a warranty replacement but no go from BMW.

On a side note, our truck was making grumbling/binding noise while doing slow turns. I thought it was tires but ended up being bad transfer case.

Heard mine squeal for the first time today at 20k miles and it was loud and embarrassing. That sound alone will Mk me return this vehicle after lease instead of purchasing like I planned. It quickly went away after a few more stop signs. Maybe it was the -8 degree temperature and -32 win chill 🥶🥶

LOL - I am definitely turning ours in after lease ends this coming summer unless used market stays strong. Hope they won't ask me to fix the brake squeak by replacing pads before turning in the car.

Yep, mine still comes and goes. Todays single digits didn’t help, but after a few hard stops it went away. There is absolutely no pattern. I literally announce to the kids, hold on I’m stopping hard. They just make fun of me.

What’s odd is that this will be my second winter, and I dont recall this last year.

21 X7 M50i here with 18000 miles. Brakes have been squealing badly for a month or two. My wife’s X6 M50i was doing the same thing but it seemed to go away. I’ll probably replace the pads and see what happens.

Stupid question of the day: what’s the process and cost of just installing the standard X7 breaks as I’m sure many folks love the M50-60i for its power but rarely need to use the breaks heavily before entering every corner from high speed.

Well, I'm guessing here as it pertains to the X7, but know from experience when you have larger calipers and rotors, the brake system itself has probably been upgraded to handle those changes.

But if you want to change to the regular brakes, just swapping out calipers and rotors should do the trick.

Also, for the squeal, this odd. Had an M50i and it didn't make any sounds. Have an X3 M40i and it's quiet. Current X7 M60i is silent as well, but only have 500 miles on it.

I bought the ultimate care+ which will cover brakes, so if it does start to happen I'll see about getting them swapped out.

But, like most have said, bedding brakes helps, you could always ask the dealer to resurface the rotors if they do that sort of thing. Also, once rotors are resurface I'd start with new pads too.

Then go bed everything in. Basically get the X7 up to around 60-70 and slam on the breaks...repeat a few times.

I think I’ll deal with it through winter and get some dustless pads in spring. I feel like I’ll be due for new pads by then.

I purchased a certified pre-owned 2021 X7 M50i a week ago. Brakes were quiet for my first week of ownership - until the temperature went down to zero degrees Fahrenheit yesterday - then my brakes started to squeak. I have 21" tires and they also made a fair amount of grumbling noise when making turns at parking lot speed.

Update. With Chicagoland temps above 0 the squealing subsided after driving for a while. Also as @serpentine said, driving for a while at higher speeds must have warmed up the brakes. This was rinse and repeat after each extended stop.

Slightly off topic but could BMW require me to fix the squeal prior lease return at my expense?

Good news is that squeal is better during the summer when I will be returning the car.

I have documentation asking the dealer about loud squeal twice (when the car was 18 months with 18K miles and 24 month at 25K miles) both noting no issues and normal.

Thanks

Back to the top for this.

I’m at 2300 miles now. Over the past 2-3 weeks I’ve been getting the dreaded brake squeal when coming to a stop. It’s been getting worse over the past few days but it’s also been in the low 20s here in Colorado. If I do a couple of hard stops then the squeal complete goes away until the brakes cool down again. Then it’s back.

So, I know it’s caused by a vibration somewhere and one of the fixes is to remove the pads and apply CRC or some other insulator like grease in certain areas.

I don’t feel like dealing with the dealer or popping wheels off myself to inspect and/or correct.

Has anyone been able to get rid of the squeal via other means. I’ve read in other forums for other cars that doing the brake bedding process helps and sometimes works.

One more thing…if you can hear it inside the noise insulated interior of the X7, then it’s about 3x as loud if you’re on the outside. I’ve had brake squeal on other cars especially Audis, but when I rolled down my window to listen it was pretty bad.

Also, I had a 2021 X7, msport brakes and zero issues/squeals out of them for 20,000 miles.

Bump - curious as well. It's nearing 0F in Chicago and now it's louder than ever. Like a freight train slowing down. I guess it's safe around pedestrians.

I’ve embraced it, it’s part of my identity now. I might drill some holes in the muffler too.

So, we've just drove halfway across the country and are now in Maryland. The temps here are in the 40s and of course the humidity is higher than Colorado...haven't had a brake squeak since we arrived.

Looks like my issue is attributed to cold temps and low humidity or the 1500 mile drive took care of it for me.
