Angry 3 week old xm - drivetrain malfunction

I've had my XM for all of three weeks and get DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION, pull over and stop or you will damage car. XM has been at the dealer for a week. Final analysis is that it needs a new transmission - it has a new transmission, only 3 weeks of use, and I was away on vacation for half of that. Lead time on new transmission is unknown - it is currently unavailable.

Yikes, this is very alarming! My XM is also a little over 3 weeks old and I have the engine light on already. I have yet to bring it in to dealer as I’ve been very busy. Called my SA to investigate and he thinks its emissions related for the hybrid system as many other XMs have had the issue lately.

Sorry to hear about the major malfunction.

Welcome to the club. Mine goes in tomorrow for the break in service that I scheduled a few weeks ago. By chance it threw a bunch of codes yesterday.

Hopefully it's something minor.

Honestly getting tired of this stuff with my recent new BMW's. My previous M5C was a mess for the first few months and the wife's 2023 X7 had some early issues too.

Sorry to hear that. How do you pull up that check control message page? With my engine light on, I can only pull up the vehicle status screen and there are no faults listed.

I hope your dealer has a new plug for the oil change. Your software will also be updated. I’m curious if you’ll get the 07-527 branch or the 03-567. Still this week, my dealer wasn’t allowed by BMW to update to 07 branch or they don’t know about the bug in Ista that makes the system suggest the 03 branch

It comes on automatically when a fault happens. I have that bug too. Depending on your version of the iLevel software, it happens more or less. Still not fixed with 03-567

Yea... They didn't have the drain plug. So that has to be ordered. Why in the world would they have a one use only plastic drain plug. Additionally, how does a dealer not stock a part that probably costs 10cents.

Anyways, the lack of a drain plug doesn't matter. The DSCI brake booster module is bad, which caused the check engine light. Can't get the car back until it is swapped out. Dealer says there is a chance the brakes could lock up (possibly while driving I was told) preventing the ability to move the car. They opened a case with BMWAG. Who knows what the part availability is.

Oh, add in there is a recall on the car and that part isn't available either. To be honest I was already pretty upset at that point that I don't remember what the recall was for.

I am going guess and put the over/under on how long they have the car at 10 days.

Edit #1 - updated the name of the actual module that is bad.

Edit #2 - Was told there are over 440 of this module on backorder with BMWAG. Roughly 120 are due in sometime soon. No ETA on additional units. Have a feeling this is going to take awhile.

Hit you VIN in the Austria recall checkup site
https://www.bmw.at/de/footer/quick-l...-aktionen.html

Translate what it gives
STOP024882 for Diagnostic Module for Tank Leaks
STOP024880 for knee air bag
0065230400 to update to Idrive 8.5

If it’s the DMTL, a software fix is coming mid next week

So there is an electronic control module in the transmission that is bad. It is built as part of the transmission so that is why the complete unit has to be replaced. Will know in a day or two if we are talking two weeks or two months. Two weeks puts us into the NJ Lemon Law arena where paperwork can start, incase two weeks drags out. Two months is a no brainer lemon in NJ.

It’s sad that such a flaw can be overlooked. I’ve always thought the idea of the XM drivetrain was to be a guinea pig for the upcoming M5. This seems to be coming true more and more…

XM is fixed and picking it up today. We will see what happens next. Fingers crossed that the brake issue doesn't pop up next.

Same with mine. Dealer has had it for over 30 days now and had to order a new transmission.

Agreed. I had a early 2022 IX 50 and it took me a while to get the bugs out.

I had this message yesterday. Went away by itself after a few seconds without turning off/on the car. Took it to the dealer today but no stored faults which seems weird considering the severity of the message.
