Steinbauer Box Upgrade F30 335D - Diy install
So, wondered if you can fit this box to your vehicle yourself? here is how! *credit also to dungaboy and teaston for installation guidance*
Standard saftety applies, Never work on live wires. If you do not know what a nut, a bolt or a screw is do not undertake this task. IF YOU HAVE A SALOON / ELECTRONIC BOOT DO NOT DISCONNECT BATTERY AND CLOSE THE BOOT, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN IT WITHOUT A BOOSTER PACK TO RESUPPLY POWER. We will fit the white wire from box to accelerator pedal first This is the area we will be working in with a part of the engine cover removed *made obvious by the red battery connection cover*. The white wire we will be feeding through the bonnet release cable gromet. To find this gromet, Follow the cable that attaches to the locking mechanism for the bonnet release at the front of the car. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150515_180647_zpsbemn8xqa.jpg.html] In this picture below you can see the trim below the steering column is removed. To remove the trim use a 10mm bit, undo the 2 most obvious bolts, pull and drop it out. The gromet you need to go through is directly behind the Silver computer module which is made obvious by being a module, and very silver. You can trace the wire from the Bonnet release handle to where it meets the gromet also. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150515_175816_zpsrlcvxre8.jpg.html] The silver kebab skewer you can see is just a typical BBQ skewer. In this pic it is already through the bonnet cable gromet. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150515_175840_zpsjxl3vrd0.jpg.html] You can see the skewer has gone straight through the gromet here. A gentle push will let it right through, Try not to pierce the gromet, but if you accidently do dont worry too much its not the end of the world. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150515_180637_zpsue1nk9li.jpg.html] Now take the white wire on the Steinbauer Box and stickytape it to the skewer, dont use too much tape, and stick it straight and in several places. Spray the skewer with a bit of lube if you like. Pull the skewer back through to the car and the white wire should come with it. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150515_181736_zpsorjooxtt.jpg.html] Now all you need to do with this wire is remove the 1 torx bolt from the accelerator pedal, push it upwards and pull to release the pedal, Run the white wire around the back of the carpet to meet the pedal. This white wire has to connect to the pure white wire on the back of the pedal. There are a few methods you could do. I just spliced it and made the connection and sealed it with insulation tape. Refit the pedal and this part of the fit is complete. To make the EGT sensor connection is pretty straight forwards but i found it a little fiddly. Mainly because the connector is not visible but is accessable. Take a look at the below picture of the EGT sensor which is next to that Red cap in the middle of this pic. It is like a thin metal tube, bent 90 degrees and then turns into cable. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150515_184841_zpse68tbkwy.jpg.html] Here is the EGT sensor a little closer http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150515_184848_zpseslblpqm.jpg.html] To find the connector. Take hold of the EGT cable and follow it with your hand very carefully untill your hand finds where it is connected. It is the rear of the engine on the drivers side. Do not just take a pot shot at guessing. Trace the wire with your hand and u will be bang on. This is a pic of the EGT sensor connection. You will be able to feel this connection * left side of pick* but wont be able to see it. i have attached this pic so you can see how it comes off *squeeze base of connection and pull*. I struggled. in the end i wrapped my hand in the wire itself, and squeezed and tugged and it popped out that way. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150515_200925_zpshku989oc.jpg.html] Make the connections for EGT and this part is complete. Now time for the injectors, The pic below is with the engine cover removed. Underneath the foam looking thing in the middle are the injectors and their connections. To access all 6 there are a few things that need to be loosened off but it is not too major. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150520_125954_zpskauuj16p.jpg.html] On the right side of the engine, Remove this bolt which holds the Air Intake Duct and Box to the car. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150520_130012_zps4c5sg1zt.jpg.html] At the rear of the engine you will find this piece of fabric looking thing. There are 2 plastic pins holding it in place either side *you can see the right on in the pic*. Remove both plastic pins and keep safe. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150520_130102_zpsxed5prmp.jpg.html] Seperate the air flow duct from the intake pipe by loosening this jubilee clip. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150520_130001_zpsdaoqlxiv.jpg.html] Also there is another duct underneath the airbox itself on the right side of the engine, pop it out. Now all you need to do is manipulate and lift the entire air flow system and box out of its rubbe seats so it is ONLY LOOSE. There is no need to remove it completely. This will allow you enough room to lift that foamy injector cover to access all 6 injectors. Start connecting the Steinbauer Loom. Find the last connection on the loom and connect this to the first injector * one closest to front of the car*. work your way back, keeping everything tidy and tucked away also looping the loom through the fuel lines. This is quite important so the injector cover fits correctly when you come to put it all back together. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150520_125943_zps1bympxvt.jpg.html] Refit everything, ensuring the injector cover fits snug before you bolt everything back together. Connect the loom the the tuning box and now all there is to do is make everything live. For this bit it is essential the car battery is disconnected and left to stand for several minutes to avoid injury or damage of components. Remember do not close the boot if you have an electric boot. This is the earthing point i eventually used. Connect the 2 black earthing wires to this bolt unless you find a better one that suits you that is fine. You can see at the top of the pic my red live wire runs up and connects to the live of the battery *made obvious by the red cap on the trim we removed earlier* it is a big torx bolt. http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150520_130035_zpsy7nli9ct.jpg.html] That is it, she should be installed and ready to go. But wait! there are one or 2 checks you must do before seating the box itself to ensure it is working. Remove the back plate on the Steinbauer Tuning box taking care and bareing in mind it is now live. Inside there are 2 LED's and on the back of the box's backplate their is a guide to what these LED's mean. Follow the guide and make sure they flash as they are supposed to. If they do not flash as they are supposed to they will flash in such a way that you can diagnose what the problem may be. Also finally there is a potentiometer thing inside the box which is used to turn the tune up *more power* or down. Leave it default or alter it as you desire. I obviously turned it up a bit because im a bit crazy like that. Seal the box, cable tie any loose loom or wires, secure the box to the car, close the bonnet, let it tick over for a few mins before you go anywhere. You may or may not get a couple of warnings pop up such as Tyre pressure monitoring, Reset the clock and all that jazz. Nothing to worry about. Please note. This box will not activate RACE mode, so dont put the car into *R* and floor it, the result will not be good for the car behind. Enjoy! hope this will help someone install their own http://s1152.photobucket.com/user/mark_western1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150409_171519_zpsaf0ufif3.jpg.html] Steinbauer Box, ACS Springs, Rear Diffuser, Spoiler, Gloss Black 12 Slat Kidney Grills, Upgraded white fog light bulbs tinted black, Rear reflector tint. We've been talking to Steinbauer and would like to offer forum members the same deal that Snipnoob got (by accident) i.e. £899 for the 330d and £999 for 335d inc VAT.
If you want us to fit we charge £80 inc VAT. Give me a call on 01485 542000. |

Nice write up ,when I connected the white wire on the pedal I got a clamp(scotch lock type) that goes over the wire just cutting the insulation it has a mail spade fitting on the side of it that takes a female spade fitting (insulated that fits to the Steinbauer white wire) ,available from Steinbauer or probably Lorcan if you ask ...for some reason this does not come with the box as standard equipment

ACS comes with 2 year warranty (from first reg, extendable to 3 years) to cover the engine and drivetrain for any tuning-related faults. Other than that the engine and the rest of the car is covered by BMW as usual. With Steinbauer there is no cover for tuning-related faults, but BMW should still cover the engine for anything else, and the rest of the car as usual. |
