Speedometer way off.

So just took delivery this past Friday and drove the car up state for a little get away. Was using Waze and have the uniden r7 radar detector. While cruising I noticed both Waze and r7 showing a speed of 75 while car was set cruise to 80. Pretty much 5 miles different above 75. Anyone else notice this?

There has been many posts about this issue but if you check with your service department there may be an iDrive software updated needed that will correct it. My speed was about 5 mph to high as well and a software update did the trick for our X7.

BMW has done this for over 30 years, the speedometer will be off by 5 mph. Just add 5 mph to the actual speed you would like to drive, problem solved.

I don't doubt or disagree with the last two posts but my speedometer was also off by about 5 mph at higher speeds (65 to 75) and after the shop installed an update for iDrive it has been very accurate. Occasionally it can be 1 mph high but not 5 mph as before so there was definitely a software bug causing this issue in my X7. It would be worth checking with your shop manager if there is an update available for your X7.

I thought mine was way off too but I got stopped in Texas for doing 78 in a 70. I had my cruise set on 80 because I thought it would be around 75. I even checked it by the highway mile markers and it was close but these things ride so smooth it doesn't seem like you are going that fast. The trooper gave me a warning. If I had of been in my truck we probably wouldn't have even got stopped.

He pulled you over for going 8 miles over the speed limit? That's BS! Almost every other state in the union won't bother you if you stay 10 mph or under over the speed limit.

Agreed... I believe 11mph+ is typically where and when they get you. 8mph over the limit is grey area and probably plead down or dismissed. Not worth the paperwork. Unless it is Virginia. Then all bets off. You can get a speeding ticket for jogging in VA.

What version update of the iDrive solved the issue for you? Can you please share?

What is the latest IDrive version and how do I find out which one I have?

I had same issue and it drove me batty. iDrive 11/2019.55 fixed it on my 2019 X7.

To check what version your car has, go to:

Car > Settings > General settings > Remote Software Upgrade (way down list - second to last)

This screen will show you the installed version.

Just checked and I'm also at 11/2019.55

Is anyone at a newer version of iDrive that is still noticing speeds off by as much as 5 mph as compared to Waze or an onboard radar detector?

Got my car back from service and software update just 2 days ago, I'm at 11/2019.55 so methinks that's the latest version.

I'll check compared to Waze on the highway and see how far off it is.

Thanks for the info Todd, I was wondering if there was a newer version available. One interesting note, during a recent test drive of a 2020 X7 40i the center display on the instrument panel shows other vehicles (cars and trucks) going around your X7 when using cruise control and my salesman ask if I'd yet gotten the latest update installed that includes this feature. If 11/2019.55 is the latest as Todd was told, then this feature may be more than a simple software update.

Does the speedometer effect mileage? I know about the 2-3 mph faster but not 5. Never had that. I have x5 g05 as well and it's on point.

Per this BMW video posted by Auricom in the advanced traffic jam assist thread (https://g07.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1695566), the advanced iconography is only available in vehicles produced from July 2019 onward.

Thanks for verifying. My salesman must not be aware that it is a hardware upgrade.

This is so confusing to me. I am on version 07/2019. I called the Genius Hotline, and they said there is no update (they were clueless). i checked online and it said the same thing. Dealership has no idea and wants to charge me for a free update. I'm so used to Tesla just pushing out updates, why is it so difficult in this case? How are you guys getting your cars updated?

From what has been posted, 11/2019.55 is the latest version and your shop should install it for free since your speedometer is inaccurate.

I just took delivery of my 40i last Friday and mine is also at the 11/2019.55 version. Have you tried checking your VIN on this site?

https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html

Mine just says I'm at the latest version. How about yours?
