its outgoing generation, so even if we like bmw more than merc, lets wait for couple of months more for new gls gen...and yes, it looks like it came from 1990's

That is a pic of the current X166 GLS. 2019 is it's last model year. This is the interior of the updated/new W167 GLE that will also carry over into the 2020 model year X167 GLS that was just shown at the Paris auto show:
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...5ca8a3bcb0.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...534c2fc37c.jpg Edit: On 2nd look at the steering wheel, dash buttons, and center screen, that pic is from the pre-LCI GL 2013-2015. The interior pic in post 1 is of the currenct (LCI) GLS. Not drastic, but slight differences. Biggest being the steering wheel, COMAND screen/software, and remote start from the app.

The X7 has the edge here imo. It's also the newcomer, so somewhat expected (boo G20 3 series). I also have to admit that the non-MSport kit also suits the X7 much better. The MSport is too busy and messy.

Being that BMW is new to the segment. Do you guys think the company's initial goal is to supplant the GLS in being number one or is it to be a viable option?
I ask this because Merc has been in the segment for quite some time and I ponder to think the longevity and sustainability will be hard to impossible to pass for BMW. I don't see it as a true rivalry like the: 3 vs C 5 vs E 7 vs S X5 vs GLE Thoughts? |

the Mercedes looks so soccer mom. The X7 is so much more imposing, composed, and coherent. And honestly, the oversized grill is growing on me. The X7 I think will simply be amazing

The GLS550 looks nice with its AMG wheels and bumpers.
Can't compared the interiors as the Merc is at the end of its life cycle. That interior has always looked dorky and had cheap plastics littered throughout. |

Prefer the X7 over the GLS except for the front view. Just can't get past the grills.

I'm a BMW fan, but we've really liked our first and second gen GL's(now GLS), which the wife drives. Both of ours had very strong twin turbo V8s. Even the turbo six that is now in the GLS is more powerful. I think BMW will have its hands full charging more for a less powerful SUV that will likely ride a bit more firm than the X7. The GL(450) strikes a nice power/price/ride balance. My only complaint is the bad MB infotainment interface. I'm hoping the strong competition will lead to nice discounts. This segment needed competition.

Thank you for posting this information. It is very helpful. Will have to go check it out and see for myself rather than just rely on these numbers. I have a GLS 450 and based on just reading the interior specs compared to the GLS (shoulder room, leg room, head room) is disappointing. Strange as the wheelbase and width is bigger than the GLS. I personally can't see myself going to a 2nd and 3rd row that is smaller/tighter than a GLS. Also, not sure how i like the 3rd row windows on the X7. the GLS has a much larger window so the 3rd row does not feel stuffy...have to check out this car in person to address some of my concerns when the GLS lease is up. GLS is a great SUV that can comfortably seat 7 adults and is a very comfortable cruiser for long drives, even the 3L motor is quite powerful. It's only lacking true cargo space when the third row is up. Will be interesting to see what MB does with the new GLS.
