2019 XDrive50i vs 2020 M50i

Hi Folks -

I am looking to buy a CPO / Used X7 and considering either 2019 X7 xdrive50i or 2020 X7 m50i. There is roughly ~10K difference between the two for similarly spec'd cars (M Sports package, Dynamic handling package, M Sport differential etc). I am trying to understand what's the value add of M50i. From what i can gather M50i has sports+ mode with launch control which is not available in xdrive50i. Are there any other adds that M50i has? Do you know if there is any difference in driving characteristics between the two.

Thanks

While the M50i's engine is the same basic twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 as the 50i, the two are different enough to gain their own engine codes.

The 50i uses the N63B44M3 unit, while the M50i uses the N63B44T3, the same version of the engine that's found in the M850i and the refreshed 7-series.

M50i models make 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, increases of 67 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque over the 50i. Enhancements to the engine relative to the 50i's unit include a block made of a new aluminum alloy, a viscous damper on the crankshaft, stronger pistons and piston rings, and an iron coating on the cylinder walls. X7 M50i will hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, 0.7 seconds quicker than the 50i version.

The eight-speed automatic has been tweaked and now has a launch-control function, and the M division tuned the suspension. X7 M50i comes standard with M Sport exhaust system, bigger M Sport brakes, and an electronically controlled rear differential - whereas on the 50i, you had to option the ZMP M Sport package and ZDH Dynamic Handling Package.

To visually set the M50i apart from 50i models that are equipped with the optional M Sport bodykit, they get unique Cerium Grey exterior trim on components like the front grille, fender vents, and wheels (if optioned)

Is the 2019 50i equipped with ZMP and ZDH? If yes then the value add is the newer N63B44T3 engine and upgraded transmission.

The 50i was a hold-over engine until the M50i was released.

Auricom Yeah xdrive50i has ZMP and ZDH. i understand the torque is higher on M50i but don’t know what tuning on the transmission gives. Also i think the xdrive50i doesn’t have sports+ mode and launch control ?

Can't recall if the 50i had launch control, but I know all G05 engine model lines do and M50i definitely. The M50i also has upgraded kinematics and suspension reinforcements for the new engine and output.

Yes torque is higher but it's a brand new engine versus carry over. Is the M50i comparably equipped?
Meaning is it also equipped with ZDH? If not get the 50i. You didn't specify mileage between both vehicles but if I was buying one and keeping it long term and since are equipped with ZDH, I personally would pick the M50i for the engine, slight differences in iDrive hardware, software, suspension, transmission and engine. Then I'd evaluate other options - Vernasca or Extended Merino or full Merino, trim, color etc.

M50i 16.5k miles

Hmmm I might go with the 50i just for the mileage. If both are in pristine condition and color combo that you like more - tough choice.

3K miles is nothing in the grand scheme of things here. The extra year of warranty on the M50i is worth much more than those 3k miles, especially since as a CPO the warranty is 5 years, unlimited miles from the original in service date.

True, thanks for the additional info which should provide the OP some assistance and perspective regarding vehicle mileage and warranty.

I'm just conjecturing at this point not knowing what additional criteria the OP is looking for to determine if the M50i is worth 10k more.

thanks for the feedback. based on the datecode M50i only has 6 extra months of warranty compared to xdrive50i.

i am planning to keep this care for 5-6 years so at some point i may have to get an extended warranty or something regardless. what i am trying to evaluate is whether the addl torque and the new engine with tuned transmission make a difference w/ drive experience and given that m50i has addl. refinements would that be a reliable engine and is it worth it..

thanks for your responses

Warranties start at their in-service date, not production date. In-service is typically the date they are sold. Some of these highly optioned cars sat on the dealer lots for many months. You can usually get the in-service date from the carfax.
