No doubt. I had three Misao red Audis in a row before I jumped to an F82 in 2015. I wasn't sure I'd like orange, blue, or Austin yellow so opted to try gray since it seemed safe. I ended up really liking the car, but could only stand the color for a couple years. I feel much better now.

trend in specific years.. national mood changes..
white got vastly popular and almost all cars look great in white and its cheaper and easy to taking care of.. for comparing colors among brands its better to compare premium to premium or sports to sports.. cause if you compare popular color on Ferrari which is red, has no similarity on Merc's popular color white or black.. + French manufacturers are still into colors more than Germans for example..

mine recent 2 were Monte Carlo Blue and Phoenix Yellow..

But to answer your question it starts from resales. Cars with colors were harder to move upon lease turn in, so dealers ordered less of them.
If dealers order less (even though you can custom order a color), when impatient people want to walk off the lot with a car and not order and wait, they ended up with a machine in greyscale since that's all there was.
And the cycle just made itself worse since more bland made more bland available.

I think you are onto something here. In the late 00’s the global financial crisis hit and the black and white colors have always been “free”. People still needed cars and maybe they chose the “free” option to save money. At the same time leasing started to become big and why pay for a color when the car would go again after a short period of time?

Even though many smaller cars are offered in colors I still often only see them in white/black so it is not just about the colors offered by the car manufacturer but mainly in the minds of people to select non colors.

I btw found this about the correlation between accidents and colors: https://www.citywidelaw.com/los-ange...nd-crash-risk/

I also found this statistic that looks at the correlation between happiness and color choice: https://www.jct600.co.uk/blog/statis...-colour-stats/ - people with white/black/grey cars are more sad than others. So lets all buy more exiting colored cars to make the world a better place.

I hope all those informed M3 buyers for the MY18 got an individual. Same goes for the MY20 M4.

If I had known individual would be free so quickly in the beginning production months, I'd have gotten Fire Orange or Miami Blue rather than "settling" for San Marino Blue (still an awesome color but Miami is my favorite)

Except German Porsche dealerships - it's even more cultural here to not drive 'flashy' cars and that's a quote from the sales people. Other than a yellow Boxster every other care was brown, gray or black.

Maybe fun colours have become a very expensive option and buyers just aren't shelling out. Mazda have some nice reds and blues & I've seen new Konas in pearlescent orange and green.

Sad, but true. I want some nice yellows, oranges, off the wall greens, bright purples, grabber blues, etc.

Leasing. When you have a lot of inventory to move you want to appeal to as many customers as you possibly can.

Custom colors are expensive for a variety of reasons and one of which is resale risk on a lease.

Just like any other fashion trend, vibrant colors will make its way back around. My guess is starting 2020. After that it’ll go back to how it is now.

All good, I got a Midnight Blue and love it

All my cars except one are white.... I just like the clean look of white cars.
People buy cars in colors they like....unfortunately a lot of people like white cars too as they seem to be by far the most popular color car in the world besides black.
I recently bought a 981 Cayman S and the only color I really searched for was white...I love it and that's all that really matters to me.

As I child in the 70's , I blame Speed Racer and the Mach 5 for my love of white cars

BMW: Buyers complaining we don't have enough colors? The brats! Hold my beer! Let's create a car with NO color! Not even black! It's just..nothing!

What I find annoying is unless you get a $2,500 upgrade to leather. Most base interiors are black. Black interiors do not show dirt, which makes it better for the resale after lease turn-in.

For sure. IMO this is industry wide phenomenon not just unique to BMW.

The funny part is that Mazda charges an extra $600 for their signature red color. Hell, Toyota charges $425 to get a Highlander in white. Both options are a pearl effect, which is a more involved process.

The 458 is black. And it's for sale for that very reason (too much attention and people trying to strike up convos everywhere I go).

Looking to get a 911 instead. I'm not sure it's possible to get a real sports car thats 150k+ and get no attention.
