From my experience I used to take out track insurance but then I realized track days are safer than driving on the street. They’re very well regulated and rules are respected

Track insurance doesn't really vary by area, other than some companies don't cover certain areas.

When I get track insurance, I use Lockton, not because they are any better than anyone else, it's just what I have been using, and doesn't seem to be any cheaper/more expensive than other companies.

I say when, because I only get track insurance if it's the first event of the season, if the weather looks to be rainy, or if it's a track I have never been to before. As Tommy said, track days are usually safer than driving on the local interstate. It does depend on how regulated the group you are going with is, though.

on the other hand, the track day I attended last sunday at WRLS ended with a multi-car incident and fatality. an air cooled porsche 930 dumped oil at the top of the corkscrew, and it put 3 cars into the wall.

generally, i do feel track days are safer than driving on the freeway, but sometimes there are factors outside of your control that you feel may warrant track ins.

I always use Lockton Motorsports. Prices are good and based on the value of your car. You get a discount if buying multiple events at once. I've never had to make a claim, but I know people who have and they said they were easy to work with. And just to point it out, they only cover your car for the accident; there is no liability, no coverage for damage to the track/walls, and no coverage for mechanicals.

+1

I had a car dump oil in front of me in the middle of T8 at Big Willow and it was a HUGE pucker moment slowing my car down from triple digit speeds while keeping it from spinning.

It is moments like that when full safety gear and track insurance shows its value

FWIW, I just moved to a spec miata to avoid paying for track insurance and to pay less in maintenance (as compared to tracking a newer high power German car)

I used Lockton also, as they seemed to be the most well known and there have been reports that they pay out without hassle from other forums

Spec Miata class in NASA Rocky Mountain routinely fields 30+ cars per race, it's a blast to watch, and I'm sure it's awesome to participate in.

Also humbling in that the fastest lap time from the best driver in Spec Miata is only about 3-5 seconds slower than my M4, around a 2.2 mile track with my lap times being 1:43 and the Miata's fastest times being about 1:47

I can vouch for Lockton; they're very easy to work with.

That's horrible. a bummer when anyone wrecks their car, but to have a fatality, definitely helps keep things in perspective. Coming into an oil slick at 100mph up there doesn't leave you a lot of options, just a horrible incident :-/

I've paid for lockton a few times but have never made a claim. from everything I've heard they are easy to work with. Just like any insurance, it's peace of mind but a total waste of money .... until you need it.
