2019 BMW X7 XDRIVE40I FIRST TEST: HOW THE BIGGEST BMW EVER SURPRISES

With just 335 hp from a turbocharged inline-six engine and standard all-wheel drive, our 2019 X7 xDrive40i tester hit 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. That's 0.4-0.5 seconds quicker than the 2017 Mercedes GLS 450 and GLS 550 SUVs we've tested (the new 2020 GLS gets updated engines) and much quicker than other eight-cylinder competitors including the 2018 Infiniti QX80 (6.3 seconds) and 2018 Lexus LX 570 (7.0 seconds). The longer but far more powerful 2018 Lincoln Navigator reached 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, and a 2015 Escalade matched that time, but the big Cadillac SUV's transmission has since been updated to a 10-speed automatic.

"I was concerned the six-cylinder wasn't going to be sufficient for this 5,300-pound SUV," road test editor Chris Walton said about the X7 after its consistent acceleration runs, "but I was wrong."

That vehicle has an excellent road presence BMW did an excellent job with it though I still believe they could have toned down the grill a bit

BMW did an excellent job crafting X7 for its target market. Looking forward to reviewing the sales statistics in 6 months from now.

Just saw a X7 the first time last weekend on the road, a lot presence and have to say it looks better than the competitions (MB mainly, imagine Escalade is a different crowd)

Yeah the grill is big but like you said the BMW X7 looks way better than the Merc. To me it's the best luxury 7 seater available at the moment.

I thought BMW was being conservative with there 0-60 estimates 5.4 sec feels like the right number.

In the article they stated that the 2015 cadilac matched that X7 but we are coming from a 2015 Escalade and the transmission on that truck was so horrible it could never match the BMW in the real world. When you slam the gas down in that truck it hesitates for a second then whips your head back with abrupt shifts. The hesitation is so bad we were hesitant to pull out in traffic. The X7 on the other hand is vey smooth and acceleration is very linear.

Also I find it funny that Lincoln claims the navigator can hit 60 in 5.5 sec when motor trend was .4 sec slower and BMW claims 5.8 and motor tend was .4 faster.

Think the 2015 Escalade has a 6 speed transmission?

I think they went to 8 and now are at 10.

No I had a 2015.5 they switched to the 8 speed mid year. The six speed was actually a better transmission. The 8 speed was garbage. The 10 might be better.

I saw one driving in Houston the other day. REALLY imposing vehicle, [like all BMWs] photos don't do it any justice.

With the turbo bmw has done a great job of creating a flat torque curve. The GM v8 is likely in the too high of a gear most of the time for gas mileage.

Awesome to hear 0-60. Won’t beat our S . But that’s pretty awesome for such a large vehicle. I definitely think the grille fits its size. I’m honestly wondering why people don’t bring up Lexus grilles. They are huge on smaller cars.
