previous owner tried to repair the curb rash on the rear 437m rim and whoever did it did a shit job and the outside of the rims is a lot lighter than it should be.

Pic will be below.

I've seen a couple threads on here where people tried repairing these same rims and they had similar issues with matching the outer clear coat on these 437M black rims.

Has anyone found a solution, and does anyone know a shop in the tri-state that has fixed these rims prior to make the rim match the rest? Don't want to spend 500+ on a new rim, I'd rather just get them all powdercoated satin black as I like the way that looks too. I saw varying info other threads.

Plus, powdercoated rims can be repaired vs who knows who can repair these rims.

I did get the car for a good deal, so a couple $$$ (hopefully 100-200) on fixing a rim wasn't a big concern of mine when I bought it as the rest of the car is mint.

One of my rims was repaired by Rallye BMW. When you put the two of them next to each other you can see the difference, but when on the car its hardly noticeable. It's def not as pronounced as it is in your pic.

Are you sure it's too light? Maybe I'm misunderstanding but the front wheel looks like it needs to be lighter. The oem black wheels are pretty clear on the face with black on the inside. The rear one looks legit.

This happens all the time. The wheels are Powdercoated black and then machined. Then the clearcoat after. However most rim repair places don’t add black tint to the clearcoat. It’s a matter of adding a tinted clearcoat, essentially just a touch of black on the mix. The reason why most don’t do it is because you can oversaturate and make them all a bit different. So it’s best to redo them all at the same time or have another original wheel at the rim shop so they can “match” the tint. black 437M and 666M wheels both have a tinted clearcoat that makes the machined area darker. The silver 437M and 666M wheels use just regular transparent clearcoat. If you have both a black and a silver wheel beside each other the machined exposed metal areas are a different finish.

You know any places in New York that are aware of this and can do it? Asking cause I see NY in your username

Mine was done as part of collision repair but the receipt billed 125. Call up the service department and collision and check pricing with both of them. They probably send it out but I'm not sure who they send it to.

I would recommend getting all 4 done so that the repair shop can match each other. I was in a similar situation. The first time round it turned out like yours. I went back and left a wheel with them to match. They got it pretty close. Sometimes it likes fine and sometimes you can tell the difference. I have gotten over it now so it does not bother me as much.

I may in the future consider getting all 4 done so it perfectly matches, and maintain the same style finish. I say that because i am not keen on the all black satin finish.

Hope this helps.

Similar thing happened to me. The damage was so small and happened because the rim hit the side bar on the tow truck. There was about .5 inch scrape. Not terrible at all. I figured that since insurance would take care of it I might as well let them repair it. While the outside looks good, I can still tell the difference. Even though they used some tint in their clearcost the repaired wheel still has a bigger shine than the other rims. I can notice the difference in clear when swapping out my wheels and they are next to each other. On the car it's hardly noticeable. The bigger thing that annoyed me is they ground down part of the inter barrel for whatever reason and didn't repaint it black. So that part shows the aluminum. Not noticeable when the wheel is on the car but I know it's there. I should have just left it but it is what it is.

Same thing happened when I had my M3. I ended up biting the bullet and buying a new wheel. No repair matched perfectly and I'm anal.

Good to know, I didn't realize the clear had some tint to it. Thank you I learn something new everyday.

the satin black looks OK to me, i like the murdered look on a black F8x but at the same time it hides the 3D look of the wheel.

Getting all 4 done would probably cost as much more than buying a used 437m wheel i've seen a ton for like 400ish

True - you could consider buying a set. Match the wheel and then sell extra 4 wheels. You could even come out breaking even or pay less than the cost to refinish.

I'm most likely going to go to Rallye soon to see if they can do it for 125ish.

Would you mind Pm'ing pics of the side profile to see the difference, if you get a chance? If not all good.

The original BMW clear coat has dark tint on the rims, once curb rash’ed it’s hard to match.
When a shop does a good job you don’t notice so much but’s it’s visible!
