Car turns off mid corner!!!!!

This happened to me today. So this is the story. I was going to put the car in tomorrow for a spark plug service and was on my way to collect the spark plugs from the supplier. On my way there I pulled back on the window washer knob to clean the windscreen and approached a sharp left corner where my car completely cuts out power and steering wheel stiffens!!! It cut out with the washer symbol on the dash. I had to brake and steer away from the kerb. I then tried to turn the car on again and it started but then died again after reaching around 1200RPM. I then found a safe spot to wait. Turned it on again after 10 minutes and it worked! But this time it had the yellow limited engine performance light.

I'm going back to the garage at 1630 to fit these spark plugs and also told the specialist about the engine light.

Ther service for spark plugs is well overdue so what do you reckon on this...??

Don't use it much and haven't changed it since I bought the car so I assume so. Don't think that's the problem. Then again what do I know...

Well the 318d I had as a courtesy car switched itself off as I went to stop at the bottom of my driveway (very steep)!! It's some kind of "green" thing I think but it meant I had no brake servo and therefore cr4p brakes - YIKES! Back to the good old auto now - phew!

By any chance did you have the car in neutral and foot off the clutch pedal? Sounds like the Auto Start/Stop function, as it kicks in just before the car is stood still! I've had it do it to me a couple of times when coasting up to a junction - a bad habit I soon learnt to forget after getting the BM!

OP - sounds like an ECU issue, best get it checked.

The automatic engine shut off only occurs when you come to an almost complete halt with the car in neutral so it doesn't occur if you coast to a halt until the car is virtually stopped.

You don't lose the brake servo either. BMW thought about that, funnily enough....

The servo has adequate capacity for at least 5 brake presses and the engine starts again if the servo vacuum is exhausted.

TBH I forgot I was in a manual so almost stalled as I slowed down (!!) then had cr4p brakes. Xenon - I've braked a zillion times on the hill and the 318d has decent stoppers - they were seriously underpowered and I ended up a couple of feet further than I should have been. It is an auto stop/start -I pullled off the road to answer my phone the day before and was shocked when the car switched off! A push of a clutch and it started again.

A bit weird but the car was VERY good on fuel and clearly geared towards economy (a dash display constantly "advised" me to change up a gear - I ignored it and thrashed the pants off the little engine!!). Not sure if it really need 255 tyres on the back though...

More grip than power is the modern way unfortunately.

NFS - my Ashtray (150bhp 235lbs/ft) had exactly the same size tyres as my 335d (225/45 17" all round)... now I think if anything my car could do with fatter back rubber (not actually felt the need for it but I'm probably being a victim of marketing) but I always thought the Astra was overtyred. Of course they looked cool...

But with the 318d M Sport - isn't 255 rubber going to cause more road drag, more aerodynamic drag, going to use a lot more resources to produce and for the owner wanting to watch running costs, be sodding expensive to replace?! The car had 6k miles on it and TBH, the rear tyres were looking pretty worn. Poor car has cleary been utterly thrashed!

That's something of a paradox.

Must have been a leak in the servo then. Even if you forget the Efficient Dynamics stuff, any car should retain enough servo vacuum for at least a few applications.

Xenon - I know. It did seem a bit odd but it honestly almost caused a collision! As soon as the engine re-started, all was fine again. 09 reg and under 6k miles on it.

That's really odd. For starters the engine shouldn't switch off until you're almost at a standstill in the first place. Mine has the ED start / stop stuff and although it's a moot point how much fuel it saves in reality I haven't had any of the problems you describe. Of course, you can switch the system off if you don't like it.

I did very nearly stall it and was almost at a halt which probably didn't help. Oh well - it was a pretty decent car overall. Quite enjoyed driving an "over chassised" car that could be rung out for every bhp for a change. Driving on the limit in a 335d is rather tricky - need clear roads and a lot of space! However I couldn't live without it's overtaking punch any more. Safe and a lot of fun! Also sounds 10x nicer. But still helped me "get" lower powered Beemers. Felt a bit of a goon in a 318d with all the M Sport kit though!
