40d Oil Consumption

So my 5 month old X7 40d with 5500 miles on it has flashed up saying that my oil level is below the minimum and I need to add a litre of oil?! The car is barely run in, is this normal? Will this be ongoing?? I never had anything like this from my merc…

Had this come up quite a few times with my old ‘16 X5M and my old ‘21 X7 M50i, I bought a few quarts of the bmw oil and added whenever the warning came up. Would bring it up to my dealer at my scheduled service and they said it was normal.

I’m at 16,000km on my 15 month old 40d and have yet to top up the oil, for what that’s worth.

Exact same thing has just happened to me today. Mine is 7 months old and just over 5.5k. Bit unnerving to get a warning to top up oil immediately!

Bizarrely I was about 400 yards from my local BMW at the time, so at least the timing was handy.

How do you usually drive the car? Frequent sharp accelerations? Sportive drive etc?

The opposite to be honest, most of the time I have our 1 year old in the back.

Interesting. I think it would be a good idea to monitor the oil level using the iDrive 8 system. I have checked mine and didn't see any problem.

Btw, I am planning to change my X7 engine oil and brake oil change in 2024, a year earlier than the suggested service timeline.

Not normal for me with the 2019 V8TT or the X7M50i V8TT. I take long 3k+ mile road trips with extended high speeds and hot weather and neither burn any oil after these trips. FYI: V8 have a hidden traditional dip stick so I can monitor any oil change precisely over the digital oil check. I am actually impressed have never see any oil loss after these long drives. I would have expected at least a half a quart loss but don’t even see any measurable loss.

So my warning light came on again yesterday, another litre of oil required. That's just over 3 months since the last one and about 3k miles additional mileage.

Strange thing is I checked the level before a trip to Ireland ( around 800miles) and it was showing as full and not requiring any top up. So effectively it's lost a litre in the last 1200 miles or so.

Booked in for investigation with BMW. A little worrying to be honest.

Just wondering if anyone was suffering with this like me?

Car was checked and nothing found to be wrong, but in the last 6 months have had to put another 2 litres of oil in...

Certainly not what i was expecting!

The dealership notified me that my new x40d LCI needed half a litre after similar mileage. I hope it’s just running in usage!
