Breaking in, One manufacturers version...
Reading in Evo this month about the new Nissan GT-R, and they state they once the car has been completed on the production line, drive it straight into a rolling road (no indication to what load or revs, would imagine they do this to run in the cams, and prob all car makers do this?..... i dont know!!) and then straight out onto a test track.
The first two laps are completed at 60mph with FLAT OUT, (Throtle wide open) and with the foot firmly on the brakes at the same time to bed in the brakes. (imagine the load on the brand new engine with both pedals being mashed together) This is the followed by FOUR STANDING starts to run-in the transmission. NOW THATS A HARD BREAK IN To finish off they drive down a rough surfaced road to test the suspension. She is then ready to go to the dealers to be sold. Wonder how many numpties on Nissan Forums when they pick up there NEW GT-R will ask how to run her in and will drive her gently for 1000 miles when its already been hammered Nissan motors usually go on for ages too.. so everyone... MASH FROM NEW.. Carlos

Don`t forget Carl the manufacturers running-in period is also to allow the owner to become accustomed to the car. The last thing a manufacturer would want is for a load of owners to jump straight in, drive like you and crash. The car would very quickly gain a reputation and "knock up" the insurance grouping.

you still wont know how the car drivers over that 4k untill you do it anyway. I used to believe in running in new car engines now i dont. This nissan examples proves you dont need to with their cars, wonder how many others are the same. I saw a 53 plate Laguna M3 vert (with hard top) last night mike and thought of you

run ins, as Mike suggests, are more to allow you to familiarise yourself with the car, notice any defects and protect BMW from 1000's of brand new crashed cars on their books.
Remember that BMWs do not come with run in brakes so you either need to baby them for a couple of hundred normal miles or learn how to bed them in too... At that I'll step back SJ SJ |

Carl, maybe these people can help with your search to beat a CSL ?
Their manual 330d is quicker than a 335d. http://antandpete.vault5.com/tuning....TotalOutput=92 |

Mikem im a member of antandpete they bought a 335d to tune and ended up giving it back as they could get the power to gel with the box and said that the 330d was faster!!!!

http://antandpete.vault5.com/tuning....TotalOutput=92 ) it's clear the process is more involved then just that. Also read what Steve wrote: Quote:
I guess I should have strung all the quotes together, perhaps you would have read it all in one go then

+2 on that James, hope your lady is feeling better.
Carlos get a REAL M3, there's one or two on ebay being sold by dealers. Gets you out of the re-map issue as well Oh I forgot, insurance could be a killer though. |

Well please correct me if im wrong, the map ''only'' sorts out midrange BHP and torque! He leaves the torque limiters in place in first and second, and also turns the map back to stock power levels at the end of the rev range, i want a healthy increase in BHP and torque all the way and would like to loose the torque limiter in 2nd gear. Before anyone goes ''it will break'' will it fuck.... It seems this CAA/Emaps map is just a slight gentle increase to midrange, thus a mild improvement in performance and 1105 reliablity which is fair enough.. I want a RE-MAP.. not a slightly altered stock map Carlos

Carlos,as you are so determined, have a word with Roy at CAA,they can arrange 'live' mapping, anywhere between £1450 - 2300 approx. Or do as Stevie suggests and go to Chipped UK. Lets us know when it's done and we can pit Simon's mapped car's against yours, interesting exercise, yes? What's the chance of it ever happening, shall I start running a book? I'll go 25-1 against Carlos putting up Any other taker's?
