I'm sure I'm being dumb, but how can I see which version of Idrive I have?
My car is a 2016 M5 Competition.

Also, assuming it is id5 or 6, is it upgradeable to 7?

You would have ID4, which is NBT. You would only be able to get ID5, which is more commonly referred to as NBT Evo.



The NBT Evo upgrade can be fairly pricey.

I'll save you some time grunking through all the threads on this topic. BMW built the NBT head unit in the dash, comm unit in the trunk, wiring harness in between and some are now saying even the shark fin all custom to 3G. That is, you can't just upgrade the comm unit to 4G and get services back. Bear in mind, all that does is get you to the next cliff when 4G is turned off.

And never mind the 20 year old principle of "separations of concerns", we have a spaghetti implementation that requires replacing everything except the antenna wire. SMH.

What reveals how onerous this is, is that BMW isn't lifting a finger to make doing the fix easier. They aren't prepping a package, discounting it or any thing to help you buy all the stuff for your car. Nor do they make it easier to solve the technical problems of those components being provisioned to your VIN. BMW isn't doing squat. Nothing. The big donut. They could but they aren't.

I suppose the skeptics would say BMW thinks we'll buy new cars. They are right of course. Mine however won't carry a BMW badge. YMMV
