The X7 Won't Turn Off In My Own Garage Without Being Locked?

Trying to understand if I have this right. This is my 6th new BMW and when arriving at my house in my garage I've always done this:

1. Press Stop/Start button to turn off engine.
2. Press Stop/Start button again to turn off standby state.

Pushing the button twice shuts off the engine and the electronics like the radio and displays, my family gets out of the car and off we go into the house.

My X7 isn't working that way. Pressing Stop/Start the first time turns off the engine. But a second press does nothing. Music keeps playing, interior displays sill lit. When I open the door, get out, and close the door, the music keeps playing and the interior displays are still lit.

Is this how it works in iDrive 7? Do I really have to lock my car in my own garage every time we arrive home to have the radio and displays turn off?

The X7 is our first BMW but I think you press the Start/Stop only once.

Press start/stop only once when you arrive. Once all passengers have been opened after that, the music will stop, and the car when shutdown after sometime (faster if you lock).

You pressing the second time turns on the electronics again, hence the music continuing even after all doors are open.

In the past, I've also only ever pressed start/stop once, and the car has shutdown correctly afterwards (after some time).

You can hold the power/volume button and everything will turn off. Most times mine shuts iDrive off when I open the driver door. Occasionally, it will not turn off until it is locked. I do have mine set to lock when I walk away from the vehicle.

Thanks for the responses, but there is some conflicting detail in the answers.

If I don't want to lock the doors upon leaving the car in the garage, are you all saying that if I just close the doors, leave the music playing, leave the displays working, that "after awhile" they just turn themselves off?

If that's correct, is there a way to know how much time it takes between leaving and it all shutting down? Thanks.

1. Pull into your garage
2. Press Start/Stop button (only once)
3. Music will stop once everyone opens their door
4. No need to lock the doors

The car knows how many passengers were in the car and will only shut the music off after everyone opens their door. I thought it was neat when I figured that out.

With the G chassis code vehicles, it was changed from the push twice to turn on/off to a single push.
There is also a setting in the idrive menu to turn off car when the doors open.

With regards into the time, that I do not know.

Thanks all. I’ll try the one-push method now.

That is actually a pretty cool tech. For example, you stop for some gas while listening to XM radio along with your wife. You get out to fill up the X7 but the music continues to play for her since she's sitting in the passenger seat.

Check your settings -

Car > Settings > Doors/Access > turn off vehicle after opening doors

Push the start/stop button once then it'll go off when you open your door.

Thanks!

But will that also turn off the engine? There are scenarios where I jump out of the car to grab something at the store and leave the engine running in the winter for my wife and kids who are staying in the car and I wouldn’t want the engine to turn itself off in that case.

That’s what the second button press used to be for (on my 2016 X5 for example). Pull up to the gas station, press the button once to turn off the engine but don’t press the button the second time to take it out of standby/radio mode.

Nope. It'll stay running if you don't hit the start/stop button first.

I'll be honest, like you I come from a long list of previous BMWs and it took me a while to realize that everything is different in this one even though things were familiar. The times I thought my car was not acting right, it was me just expecting it to act like the others...and it doesn't.

The tablet app "BMW drivers guide" was my best friend for a month.

Good luck and enjoy. I hope this fixes it for you.

Thanks wrickem- that did the trick. Whew.

Agreed that everything is a little different, I will never forgive BMW for getting rid of the red/blue temperature wheel or burying the temperature “sync“ button deep in menus (with no shortcuts possible, to make it even worse).

Glad it worked out.

The red/blue wheel is still there, it's just buried now in the menu. Car>settings>climate control> heating/ventilation>driver or passenger >temp adjustment -there's your red/blue. (Or just say "BMW open temperature adjustment")

I find myself using voice controls for most things like that now, it works so much better than Voice ever did. As soon as I drop off my passengers, I say "Villenille, (I changed her name) sync temperature" and it's all the same again.

Believe it or not, there actually is an easy "hidden" shortcut for temperature sync. Press down on the A/C part of the "Menu / A/C" button. Or if you press up on the Menu part of the same button, you can do it digitally via iDrive.

You're welcome.

Found this. I think it just confirms what people have said. But looks like the standby state goes off after 10mins.

I’m having a lot of trouble with this one after having read the full thread.

Sequence:

1. Pull into garage
2. Push start / stop once- engine stops- I drive stays on
3. Engage parking brake
4. Everyone gets out from various doors
5. All doors closed, key in charger slot of car (we keep it there all time
6. I drive, radio, seat massagers and iPads stay on

Check in 30 mins- no change.

As of now the only way I have found to turn off I drive is to lock the car or push and hold down the volume / power button manually.

Setting are set to (unchecked) lock vehicle after exit
And (checked) turn off car after exit and all passengers left

What am I missing?

This has always been a head scratcher for me on recent bmws. I feel like the way it works most of the time for me is holding the button down after the car is off as you open the door. Seems to work most of the time. Nothing more weird than having to turn your radio down when you get out of the car lol
