1" of snow on the ground - stock tires didnt fair well

Be careful with the stock all seasons on even a light covering of snow. X7 was sliding going up a small incline. This was in NYC yesterday with about an inch of snow on the ground.

What's your size and model of tire? I've driven through 4-5 inches without issue on the stock all seasons that came with the 21 inch rim option.

Bridgestone Alenza RFT? From my experience RFT in general do not perform well over their conventional counterpart. A dedicated winter/snow/ice tire that is not a runflat would yield the best results in cold, snow and or ice.

Those are the tires we have. They seem ok. Not as good as the Nokian R3 I have on one of my other cars or even the BFG KO2s on my Wrangler but but still passable.

The 21" AS RF's performance was that bad?! I'm in CO and have been driving on AS for many years in the mountains and never had any major issues. I've got an M50 coming with the same 21" and AS RF.

Here is a link for different solutions. For my wife's X7, we installed studded Snow tires. It has worked well. We have done road trips from tip of Washington state to San Diego Cali. From snow and ice to nice and sunny, the drive was very nice and safe. We also get light snow and ice where we live. It has worked well for us.

I'd check you in fact have AS tires, that sounds pretty strange. I've never had dedicated winter tires in NYC and never felt like I've needed them even on snow days

From your post on your car in other threads - you have the summer tires not all season.

I concur. Here's your X7's sliding issue.

You either have Pirelli PZ4 high performance summer or Conti PremiumContact 6 grand touring summer in front 275/40R22 and rear 315/35R22.

the access panels on each side are propped up by the cover being stowed in the "basement". without the cover how do the side panels stay in place?

either one of those should not be on the road with snow, sleet or slush even under temps below 40 degrees.

I have these same summer performance tires in the NYC area. Glad I got a second set of wheels with 21” Blizzak winter tires. Has made all the difference, they’ve been awesome on long drives in snow and ice storms.

Interesting - I don't have the tray either but there are some holes which look like might be attachment points for a tray....

Perhaps if neither of us have a spare then we do not receive tray.
I do not have a spare; do you?

They are 22s. Will definitely be mindful of snowy days until I sort out winter tires.

If you're on 22" wheels I am 99% certain you are on summer high performance tires. I would avoid any and all snow along with any days that are not completely dry at a minimum. You will have reduced performance if any performance under 40 degrees. Your X7 will handle like a supermarket shopping cart that just ran over a grape on a cold tile floor.

if i understand correctly what you're implying is that an obese person should not wear running sneakers. i would not wear sandals to shovel nor would i wear winter boots to go to the beach. if and when building your x7 you have options of equipping it to your tastes, desires or location. not everyone lives in an area that requires A/S tires or winter or most people with these vehicles choose to have dedicated wheels/tires for the appropriate season. urus, cayenne, bentayga, rrsc, whatever in-between... proper tool for the job.

Not your fault! I always remind my family members and friends to be mindful of the tires before they start negotiating on a car especially premium brands with sport trim or badge. Not everyone wants to go through tire swaps especially when they aren't used to it.
My first experience with summer and staggered figment was 2010 X5 diesel. Who imagined a diesel with summer performance tires
