+1. I LOVE BMW. It's my favourite brand by far. But seeing as how this car will likely cost $200k it makes zero sense to buy one over the roadster. I'll keep my Viper and McLaren because I truly love the way they make me feel, but at that price I'm set on buying the Tesla Roadster as my next supercar and I'd buy it 10 times out of 10 over a reskinned i8 with a 4 banger.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm more interested in BMW's upcoming X8M, provided they don't mess up the hoffmeister kink like they've been doing lately.

Did I mention the i8 has done a lousy job of holding any type of value? They now cost as much as an M3/M4.

When you say M Next, I envision an M car that has the best of what M has to offer in terms of tech and sporty characteristics.

The M Next should have the best M engine, the best and most powerful electric assistance systems and tech BMW has to offer.

M Next and X8 should be the halo M cars for BMW. I see nothing in this upcoming version of vehicles that shows that.

Very disappointed if true.

BMW's board needs to pull their head out of their arse!!
It has to have a V8 if it's going to be ICE.
It better be faster than the NSX too. It should be F8 speed if you really want to compete, but BMW does REALLY poorly in the $160K+ vehicle range.

If they want to build a flagship car it needs at least the S58+something

There was a rumor a few months back about an AMG gt /porsche carrera fighter
I reckon that would have been a better choice than this, but I don't have much faith in BMW anymore

After the stupid technical and design choice they've made recently, I'm not going to buy another BMW

BMW if you're reading, it's time to wake up!

I think they sold their stake in that company. They simply couldn't get the costs down.

This post is why the i8 failed.

People who can afford these cars want two distinct options.

They either want a BEV with its instant torque and low 0-60 OR the visercal experience of a big ICE with a stupidly high top speed and convenient to fuel.

The kick is that neither of these cars will be driven every day. Owners, for a variety of reasons but I suspect mostly financial, don't want a super car as a daily driver. They want panache or exclusivity which retains value ($$).

The i8, because of its hybrid powertrain, was designed to be daily driver. Nothing special about that.

Will undoubtly have same furniture and gear from an i3, at a price point of a Bentley Continental GT, with less.

I overpaid for an 8 once. Not happening a second time.

Supercar i8?

The i8 was a complete joke. If this is true, it is what the i8 should have been from the start.

I'm not saying that 4cil engines can't be exciting, but this had better be a new S engine that revs to the stratosphere and has tons of character, because as good as the b48 is, that is NOT a supercar engine!

If it's going to have a regular boring 4cil engine, might as well go full EV. This is actually one of the reasons why I thing the new Cayman/Boxster will be more interesting than the current 718 models, because the boxer 4 sucks!!

It won't be a V8. Yes it will be a four cylinder with powerful electric motors taking the car to twice or below three times as much PS as the i8. It's an M product so expect Performance will be at the forefront of its attributes.
The i8 will of course continue but not as the form it leaves in.

BMW i8 was more than a car it was an entire philosophy that taught new things to the industry. It was very much a learning exercise to provide solutions to future problems.

The X8M is intense but designed to be extremely desirable to the chosen customer.

This was a freaking expensive learning exercise.
The "entire new philosophy" taught me where you will end up when you have a great design with a light body material but you are putting a drone motor inside.

Put in a twin turbo V6, make a nicer rear bench instead of those rear carpet patches, make it affordable -as it is nowhere near a $200.000 competition- and it might sell.

You might have a better chance with a very powerful 4 banger that will make over 350 HP if you can, as it will sell in Europe as well benefiting from the low tax system if doesn't exceed the 2000 cc.
Without heavy batteries and electric motors, a small but very powerful NA engine only with a better interior will make it cheaper and more attractive financially.

Or,

Keep that mix and match and call it the next i8 failure.
